The other side of the coin is Netflix has 1813 shows and 3854 movies this would mean if they were to keep their catalogue size they'll need to have 544 local shows and 1075 local movies .

I wonder even if the total number of locsl TV shows and local movies that were ever produced matches those number's.

I think government trying to force Netflix to buy the SABCs back catalogue and get into a production partnership with the SABC and add a new line to the Gravy Train Express

I'm sure there are that many local old Afrikaans and English movies. Shows... maybe not.

I'd be more than happy to film a couple hundred hours of the sea... or a wall... if the money is right.

SO the SA Gov, just showed their true colors of Marxism, 1nce again. I don't think these idiots really thought this thru. Netflix will have nothing to loose if the decide to leave. You can't make up stuff like this. Can users in SA have some sort of class action lawsuit against the Gov? So glad I left in 2003.

How much local content do you think they own? Netflix is going to have to buy it from somewhere.
According to @Geoff.D, the Parliament channel on DSTV is something to behold (in very small doses), maybe Netflix can offer an infinitesimally small amount of ZARries for that and considering the sheer volume of crap it should far exceed 30%.
Provide a 24/7 live weather video of Table Mountain, Cape Point, V&A, actually any point a tourist might go, and they will have plenty of local content.
If you put tourists in the feed, it won't be local content anymore, better to have Ace's Shebeen (pinhole cameras scattered everywhere) and videos of Gigaba jerking off probably with Ace and Hlaudi, that will teach the SABC and Stella not to mess with Netflix.

Hi, I found this interesting & wanted to make my first post.

I think Netflix should intentionally buy up as much content from Etv as possible.

I would try my best to avoid paying the SABC.

I also think they should choose a channel like ENCA.

Enca has many shows i.e the news, Devi show, Checkpoint etc.

Use those shows individually to increase content.

Get in bed with Etv & reach a mutually beneficial agreement.

Approach people like Dj fresh & Gareth Cliff.

Air their podcasts on netflix.

Approach youtubers that produce a decent quality of content in SA. Like that Grant Hinds gaming guy. It should be cheap for Netflix & its a big platform for him.

I see this decision benefiting 2 parties.

Dstv & Sabc will directly be benefitting from this.

Less competition for dstv

Dstv has a lot of local content

Netflix might have to buy content from Dstv, like Tali on Showmax etc

Encouraging local content should be a good thing but should be reasonable to the broadcaster otherwise they will just feature any old rubbish like you will find on dstv and sabc. It should be quality and market driven. If it is going to be forced down the market's throats it will simply find another avenue to satisfy its needs! Netflix and others must manage this imposition from the State carefully and not upset its customers.

Sure let’s do this.

But then **** can the SABC and provide all their archives to all the streaming services so they can all broadcast it equally and people can choose whichever one they want.

Now that, would actually make sense. At least much more than this illogical idea.

If this actually happens I’m back to never using SA streaming services again and it won’t be long before they all eject and we are back to having nothing.

Hory Sheet .. I never bothered with a VPN before (Not much of a heavy Netflix / TV user) but the USA selection is 'MASSIVE' compared to our local catalogue.

/preps a binge watch list for tomorrow.
