I mean didn’t they already do this with the radio? And it was a superb **** up?

Surely you only need that one already idiotic example to learn from.

If you want to incentivise these companies to do local then give them tax breaks or take the utterly useless and retarded FPB nonsense away.

Don’t mandate them with quotas, they’ll simply take their money elsewhere.

Hi, I found this interesting & wanted to make my first post.

I think Netflix should intentionally buy up as much content from Etv as possible.

I would try my best to avoid paying the SABC.

I also think they should choose a channel like ENCA.

Enca has many shows i.e the news, Devi show, Checkpoint etc.

Use those shows individually to increase content.

Get in bed with Etv & reach a mutually beneficial agreement.

Approach people like Dj fresh & Gareth Cliff.

Air their podcasts on netflix.

Approach youtubers that produce a decent quality of content in SA. Like that Grant Hinds gaming guy. It should be cheap for Netflix & its a big platform for him.

I see this decision benefiting 2 parties.

Dstv & Sabc will directly be benefitting from this.

Less competition for dstv

Dstv has a lot of local content

Netflix might have to buy content from Dstv, like Tali on Showmax etc
We the market should continue to show dstv we are not stupid and we will not fall for this game they playing. That is why they are loosing subscribers and still they don't listen to the market. SABC made themselves irrelevant long ago. Dstv will go the same way if they persist with their monopolistic profiteering methods. Your Etv and other ideas should be considered by NETFLIX and other platforms.

Frig Off!
Those that want to watch local content can tune into:
SABC1
SABC2
SABC3
ETV
Multichoice - numerous channels available at a lekker price! :notworthy:

The reason why I subscribe to Netflix and Prime is so I can choose what I want to watch without having sh*t rammed down my throat. I pay for it and don't get any subsidies from government or anyone else so why would I want local content on an international offering. It is called freedom of choice you morons.

I am sure someone will comment on the merits of local content. Before you do, don't even bother as it will not sway me in the least.

Sure let’s do this.

But then **** can the SABC and provide all their archives to all the streaming services so they can all broadcast it equally and people can choose whichever one they want.

Now that, would actually make sense. At least much more than this illogical idea.

If this actually happens I’m back to never using SA streaming services again and it won’t be long before they all eject and we are back to having nothing.
The government won't share content equally. They will look for the highest bidder.

Most South Africans aren't familiar with VPNs or want to spend money on a VPN.

Netflix will become another Showmax. A few decent shows in a sea of cr@p.

I think this will push Amazon Prime out of SA. They barely have enough content now & doubt they have the numbers of Netflix SA.

The title is jumping into a conclusion, first sentence of the article reads,

and the City Press headline, unfortunately for me the article is behind a paywall at this time,

so,

1. Will the Netflix library cut down to meet the local content quota, and
2. is it likely that the Netflix library will be cut down to meet the local content quota, or
3. will the content quota on Netflix and other streaming services succeed?

A white paper is still only what it is, a white paper. Streaming services will also present the DOC with a white paper. Feasibility study, yada yada... It is too early to presume that the 30% content quota will be set in stone.

Yes, it is likely that there will be a policy in the best interest for the preference of local content. Multichoice can also go fly a kite. I checked out the ShowMax content library the other day, and I was utterly disappointed in their lacklustre selection for certain genres.

If there is going to be healthy competition then there is no place for the enforcement of quotas of any kind.

On the face of it, it is the SABC which is failing their mandate for the production and marketing of local content. Netflix knows this, and so

How would the State benefit from enforcing a 30% local content compliance?

I doubt even netflix has the numbers needed to make staying in SA viable.

On the other hand, a vastly reduced library will make the process of choosing what to watch somewhat easier.

Well Showmax has actually become surprisingly decent with time.

Is that local content though or licences for stuff like HBO?

Don't have any experience with Showmax, I do subscribe to Netflix every once in a while though.

Put up the entire Carte Blanche archive
It will instantaneously comply with the ratio and there is no better way to say **** you to the ANC than to provide on demand access to the 1 show that airs their corruption almost every episode

I'm sure Multichoice would love to help Netflix out of a bind. They're just so darn nice.

Multichoice is already a Netflix customer and their dependency on Netflix for content is only going to grow.. This would just mean Netflix buying some content from MC in return

Which of the new Netflix shows in particular? I know there were some licensing deals in place before Netflix launched in SA but I wasn't aware of any recent releases.

Yeah I think you're probably right, I haven't watched DSTV for anything other than sport in a long time, I just checked the online schedule and I dont see any netflix content. But they do carry Netflix as an OTT service so they do have an active relationship..

That said, I think whats more likely to happen is for Netflix to look at SA and us being 0.00001% of their revenue and decide its just not worth the admin and pull out of SA entirely..
