Netflix loses 1 million subscribers in Spain after rolling out fee for account sharing

Netflix Inc. lost more than one million users in Spain in the first three months of 2023 according to market research group Kantar, a sign that the streaming giant’s crackdown on password-sharing could backfire.

In early February, Netflix introduced a €5.99 ($6.57) monthly fee for users in Spain who shared their login details with another household and technical measures to detect such sharing.

Password sharing makes Netflix affordable to just about anyone.

Losing users who are using a shared account is to be expected. This just shows that over 600 000 accounts were using shared passwords. Thats a lot of money Netflix was not getting but still had to provide services for.

And to directly blame the other 300 000 or so account on password sharing is also a but short sighted. Could be just crappy content, or even the crazy price increases that have happened over the past year or so - the streaming services would be one of the first things to go.

It would be interesting to see if other streaming services also took such loses, then it could imply other reasons for losing subscribers.

Piracy comes with it's own foibles. For many streaming is simply easier, legal, and otherwise worth the subscription, particularly if it's shared amongst a few people.
and it just works..no extra admin...but its not practical to pay for all since the catalogues of some of them are just not strong enough...

So for me personally I share on a quid pro quo arrangement with family. They use my Netflix while I use their Disney+ for example. If they were to stop me from sharing my password, I'd likely alternate months of different services because there's no way in hell that I'm signing up for everything all at once.

Between three households on three continents we've made streaming an affordable solution across multiple platforms.

Netflix should have taken this opportunity to update their packages as well.

They can't sell a 4 screen option and then start limiting the package about where the 4 screens are located.

They need to reduce every package to a single screen (and decrease the price to reflect that)

Cancelled mine a long time ago. Use families one if I really want to watch something.

If you are single maybe that works, but in a family of 4, thats the dumbest idea. They actually cater for a family of 4. Thats why they set it up how its supposed to be.

Switching to a single screen, will be a big mistake for them.

Then you add the users ?

R199.00 for 4 screens

or

R49.00 per screen/user

But don't charge me R199.00 for 4 screens and limit who can use those screens / where they nee to be located. Of course I'm going to get annoyed that I'm not getting what I pay for - and obviously there is going to be backlash

Change the packages and charge per screen / user.

I pay my R49.00 - you pay your R199.00 - so we're both happy
The lower rate undercuts all competition and attracts for to the platform

The cost doesn't scale the same. The average 4-stream family using the product as designed will very rarely stream the same quantity as 4 individual households on a single stream. It's a value add after all.

I'm just giving an example on prices as I don't know their costs.

The alternative is doing this the way they're trying and well, that's not making them popular at all.

EDIT : R100.00 for the 1st screen and R50 per screen after ? Either way the point is they should have changed packages first

Soo many freeloaders in South Africa that wants things, but wont pay for it. Yet they complain about the quality of service they get too.
I am sure you are very proud for paying for your tv license and e tolls too lol

On another note - how would you feel if they changed it to R499.00pm and allowed you to 10 screens, subject to their limitations of course ?
It caters for both your 4 personal family - but also my neighbors 10 person family ?
