Netflix must be taxed and regulated the same as DStv in South Africa

MultiChoice has called on ICASA to ensure the playing field for all broadcasters in the country is level, regardless of their underlying technology.

ICASA will hold public hearings for an inquiry into subscription TV services in May, and MultiChoice has briefed the media on the feedback they will give.

Shame Multichoice... feeling butthurt that someone can do stuff better and cheaper than you?

If they make things difficult for Netflix, Netflix will leave....

How about we don't.

Multichoice is a fossil, a old way of doing things that cant compete in the modern world, lets treat netflix for what it is , something new instead of giving unfair advantages to the huge monopoly that is multichoice.

I hope Netflix don't leave. I hope they reduce prices to destroy the streaming options of NoChoice.
I don't think they rely too much on income earned in SA

Gotta agree on the tax, if they're earning income here then they need to pay the piper.

Netflix already pays that dumbass FPB tax AFAIK

I agree with the proposal to tax Netflix, but what about all the past years when Multichoice monopoly was "playing the field" all by itself?

Meeting BEE requirements.
yeah, we must keep up that black face to make up for the never-ending white-guilt.

They should probably pay VAT but anything over and above that? Nah.

Netflix should simply just close down all local servers, leave all staff unemployed and force those in SA who wants to view its content to sign up through another country. No more taxes to be paid in SA, no laws to abide by, easy as that.

I don't think Netflix has much in the way of staff and servers in South Africa, do they?

Netflix is not a broadcaster. Its a streaming service. Its like treating the old video rental stores of old like broadcasters.

Next thing Multichoice will want bookstores regulated like them because people can choose to read a book instead of watch Dstv.

Netflix should be paying tax on income earned in SA, just like any business which earns income from providing services. If they aren't, then its SARS who are failing.
