Netflix wants to stop password sharing

So their current T&C's says your account is for "personal and non-commercial use only and may not be shared with individuals beyond your household"

Are people so cheapskate that they can't pay for their own account? Dear lord, seems everyone wants everything for free as always.

The subscription covers 1,2 or 4 streams within the same household so if all viewers live in the same household or there's a kid at varsity that's generally acceptable but if you have adults sharing the same account but don't share the same residence then that's what Netflix is trying to curtail. They're probably more interested in the 4 stream accounts being used by four different adults living in their own separate residences.
Which is exactly what DSTV wants for DSTV now, but apparently I am wrong for thinking this.

So... My wife and kids will not be able to use the one account on their devices going forward? I'm sure as **** not paying monthly fees for each person in the family.

Off to the high seas we go then?
If they are in the same household than they can use one of the four streams you've got.

Yes, yes they are. Apparently R169 is too much.

A few years ago they encouraged this :

"Netflix CEO Reed Hastings said that consumers sharing Netflix account information was “a positive thing.” - but I guess this was same household sharing ?

If the start IP level blocking of passwords that's a problem. We don't all connect via same IP.
Not sure if they will go that far, I think they'll probably check patterns and see if there is any suspicious usage or something. Not sure how they would actually do this.

WTF is that?

Granny: "Your eyes will go bad if you watch more than 2 hours television."

this dont make no sense!

they provide individual profiles and simultaneous logins on a single account, also how will they know if its s shared password or if im travelling.

Watching the same thing from multiple connections doesn't necessarily indicate sharing with anyone outside the household.

People want to save money, not get it for free.

They will likely just encourage the owner account to invite other email addresses to access the account, instead of sharing the owner username and password to log in to Netflix.
The same way Google Play Music's family plan works, one account pays and invites other family emails.
Their billing teirs are based on simultaneos streams, I doubt they'll try stop family members on different devices from doing so.

If you watch the same show 4 times in a day on different IP's then they will probably think the password is shared. Don't do that.

But there is no reason that couldn't happen in a single household.

Their pricing plans don't mention households at all: https://www.netflix.com/signup/planform

Edit: Yes, I know it's buried deep into their T&C's.

There's probably not a lot of those power users who have 4 different internet connections each linked to one of 4 different TVs with the same shows being watched across all those different TVs and connections every day.

"Netflix is working on plans to stop subscribers from sharing their account passwords, Independent reports."
...
"Peters added that Netflix does not have any immediate plans to curb the practice."

So which is it?

If netflix had any plans to stop sharing, why does it provide profiles and ask who's watching?
At home we have different family members and we use different devices.

  • Our Basic Plan lets you stream TV shows and movies from Netflix on one device at a time in standard definition (SD). This plan also lets you download titles to one phone or tablet.
  • Our Standard Plan lets you stream TV shows and movies from Netflix on two devices at the same time and in high definition (HD) when available. This plan also lets you download titles to two phones or tablets.
  • Our Premium Plan lets you stream TV shows and movies from Netflix on four devices at the same time and in high definition (HD) and ultra high definition (UHD) when available. This plan also lets you download titles to four phones or tablets.
This is exactly what I want to know. My account is shared with my parents and the fiance's family. We have 5 profiles (the max, I believe) and each couple has a profile, with the 5th going to the kids- almost identical to up there^^. If they force me to abandon this practise, I will- and the account will be going right with it.
