Netflix warns it will have to slash its library in South Africa to meet local content quotas

So... slash your library and you will definitely end up with the same income as the SABC....

On one side I think this is playing into what the anc wants. They want to kill and cripple competitive companies in this country so they have a slight chance with their incompetent attempts to compete. I guess VPN's will be the next target.

Well, could just do something like take a picture of table mountain, then add 1m 1 hour long videos of a picture of table mountain, if it's just the pic it shouldn't take much server space to store.
Will be interesting how the law goes.
Better value than Multichoice,/subscribes

Netflix should just stuff their catalogue with local garbage from the SABC archive.

I cannot put in words how much I hate this government.

Even when you try and get away from all the misery by just tuning out to some TV they will still find a way to get their garbage across to you. We didn't want Hlaudi's greatest hits and we don't want local garbage on our TVs.
This is all just a method to justify the use of the digital TV-License:
Step 1: Force streaming services to provide local content
Step 2: Legislate that TV License Payments should be included as part of your Netflix/Amazon Prime etc packages due to the local content rule
Step 3: Profit and laugh all the way to the bank

The ANC couldn't give 2 sh*ts about any local content unless it paves the way for them to increase the feed in the trough!

Its a **** law that will make more people either pirate or watch via VPN

In South Africa its best to buck or sidestep the laws, apparently....

Surely they can tell government to get rekt? It's like telling F1TV they need to show the regional racing or drifting (ugh!) on their streaming service too.
People will simply cancel their local services and take on the global service. Netflix wins either way.

Local SA content isn't bad, I quite enjoy some of the local productions.

Tried netflix for a few days and it didn't have the documentaries I was looking for.

"...churning out large quantities of low-budget local content to make up their quotas..."

In a nutshell.

Netflix should just stuff their catalogue with local garbage from the SABC archive.

Pumpkin patch was a good show. I always waited for that every day...especially natasha staples the presenter. She even went on to do porn after the show ended.

In other news the use of VPNs increases in South Africa
