Netflix warns it will have to slash its library in South Africa to meet local content quotas

How does the guavament define "local content". What if Netflix uploads several thousand hours of a local lion humping. On repeat. Will this be "local content". They can also pay a South African for editing it.
I seem to remember that Claudy "sold" the SABC's archive to Multichoice. Back when they diddled in the dark with that horrible coms minister.
What are the chances they offer that at huge price inflation ( the SA govt set the example for that.over and over) to Netflix to add to the local offering.
And in the process then degrade Netflix SA to the same shitty level as DSTV.
All that will then be a huge boost to pirating.

I have a solution for Netflix.

Set up a metric ass-ton of livestreams of nature reserves etc. Each camera acts as its own show.

Local content - ✓

30% of the library - ✓

Cheap - ✓

No BEE profiteering - ✓

Everyone around the world does this it's not new or original, Netflix is bluffing anyway not even news worthy.

Netflix will have to cut its library in South Africa to meet local content quotas

Netflix has warned that the South African government’s plan to impose a strict 30% local content quota on streaming video services will likely backfire.

Shola Sanni, the director of public policy for Sub-Saharan Africa at Netflix said that such quotas would likely force the video streaming service it to reduce the size of its library in South Africa.

The alternative is that on-demand content providers would resort to churning out large quantities of low-budget local content to make up their quotas.

Netflix said its business model would always incentivise it to choose quality over quantity. Therefore it would choose to reduce the size of its content catalogue in South Africa before pumping out low-quality local productions.
I don't want local content. If I wanted local content I wouldn't have Netflix. Why must we be told what we can and cannot watch? The government wants us to pay TV licence and still dictate the content allowed. It's not fair and if this happens, I will be using a VPN. We have so much other issues that need to be sorted out in this kak country but local content is what they are concerned about.... Bullshit!!!

A few thousand hours of test clips would be simple to produce locally.

Do it already. This is what happens when you let ill-conceived ideology drive your decision making. I wouldn't use Netflix ZA region anyway

Don't use the EU version either

don't see what the problem is, all the good Netflix content is freely available on the high seas ... no quotas, no subscription, no VPN required
