Netflix's ad-supported plan won't have offline watching

Netflix Inc. isn’t planning to let users of its new ad-supported tier download shows and movies to their devices for offline viewing, according to code found inside of the company’s iPhone app, removing a feature that customers enjoy on its regular service.

The move suggests Netflix is doing what it can to distinguish the upcoming service from its current offerings.

Have you been able to download fron Netfix on Android TV - far as I know - not.
No, purely because your media box doesn't have enough storage.
Why is NF making so many changes? Is it because they feel threatened by all the competition popping up? Ads, no more password sharing, no more downloads.

Downloading is intended for mobile devices such as phones and tablets. ADFAIK that holds true for all the major streaming services, not just Netflix.

Not allowing downloads is just going to encourage piracy.

That is how I understood the proposition, but the article is putting a lot of emphasis on not being able to download, thus just wondering, if I missed something in my ignorance.

No most people don't carry around their TV's.

Niether do I, nor do I watch any content on my phone, why I have a TV and a 2019 Shield TV Pro, which has a external SSD connected to it via a USB port, and a few SMB shares mounted, via a Gigabit ethernet network.

I do stream, when my internet connection allows me, when my Supersonic Fixed-LTE A, slows to a snails pace, I am not stuck with my finger stuck up my rear end, I just switch source, and continue a pleasant evenings viewing.

Edit:

Considering the possible change to 5G Rain or Supersonic, as it will be available shortly, just not uncapped like my current package.

You can't download to your Shield TV Pro with an SSD connected? Strange, I have been doing that for years.

Maybe they specifically blocked it on your account.

Please explain how you record Netflix on you Shield, to the connected SSD.

Save me the extra effort of having to use a screen capture device with HDMI passthru.

Unfortunately this makes it a no-go for me. I use the offline/DL option frequently & find it super handy.

Netflix ad-supported tier launching next month: $7 per month, 720p streaming

Netflix has officially announced its new ad-supported tier, which will launch on November 3. In the United States, this new “Basic with Ads” plan will cost $6.99 per month. You’ll see around four to five minutes of ads per hour and video quality will be limited to 720p…

Netflix with ads: Pricing and features

Netflix says the launch of the Basic with Ads plan won’t impact any of its other plans. The company says it’s “everything people love about Netflix, at a lower price” just with “a few ads in-between.”

Those ads will consist of both pre-roll and mid-roll advertisements. This means you’ll see ads before your show or movie starts to play and in the middle of the content. However, Netflix says that a “limited number of movies and TV shows won’t be available due to licensing restrictions.” The company promises this is something it’s “working on” changing for the future.

Additionally, Netflix says that the ad-supported tier won’t offer the ability to download content for offline viewing. This limit makes sense considering that the ads have to be inserted on a per-stream basis.

- What stays the same: A wide variety of great TV shows and movies; personalized viewing experience; available on a wide range of TV and mobile devices; change or cancel your plan at any time.
- What’s different: Video quality up to 720p/HD (now for both our Basic with Ads and Basic plans); average of 4 to 5 minutes of ads per hour; a limited number of movies and TV shows won’t be available due to licensing restrictions, which we’re working on; no ability to download titles.
With Netflix’s new ad-supported plan tier, prices now range from $6.99 per month up to $19.99 per month.

- Basic with ads $6.99/month: Watch on 1 device at a time, 720p quality, no offline downloading, ad-supported, not all content available
- Basic $9.99/month: Watch on 1 device at a time, 720p quality, offline downloading to 1 device
- Standard $15.49/month: Watch on 2 devices at a time, 1080p quality, offline downloading to 2 devices
- Premium $19.99/month: Watch on 4 devices at a time, 4K quality, offline downloading to 4 devices at a time

I believe its more about serving the ads on downloaded content. The ad won't be stitched into the video so you need access to the ad servers to pick the ad to serve.

They may have some ad block detection which they will use to force you to disable your ad blocker. But that's a constant competition between the ad block devs and the detection devs to outdo each other.

I'll stick with my 2 connection 1080p streams account.

Netflix needs to streamline their offerings. Rather than pricing on quality and number of streams, and now ads, they need to focus on just the number of concurrent streams.

Also $6.99 for a single ad supported stream without downloads is just too much.

The whole point of AVOD is to use the ads to fund the content and simplify your user experience. I don't get this model from Netflix it just doesn't make sense and takes us back to the old cable/satellite model but maybe that's what they are trying to test to see if the market will accept that again.
