Netflix needs to streamline their offerings. Rather than pricing on quality and number of streams, and now ads, they need to focus on just the number of concurrent streams.

Also $6.99 for a single ad supported stream without downloads is just too much.
This tier is gateway tier to get people back on platform

Definitely too expensive given that's about what you pay for Prime Video OG.

The whole point of AVOD is to use the ads to fund the content and simplify your user experience. I don't get this model from Netflix it just doesn't make sense and takes us back to the old cable/satellite model but maybe that's what they are trying to test to see if the market will accept that again.
It's just so unnecessarily convoluted.

If it was a Standard package with ads for that price, then maybe. But this is based on their low end "Basic" tier, and is unlikely to entice anyone back.

FWIW bundling aside, Hulu's ad based product is 50% cheaper than their ad free package.

Actually now that I think about it it's probably to keep people on platform rather than leaving. instead of outright cancelling they can just downgrade and still save money.

That price could be maximum price that customers won't be bothered to make the effort to cancel the service, if that makes any sense

Downloading is intended for mobile devices such as phones and tablets. ADFAIK that holds true for all the major streaming services, not just Netflix.

Not allowing downloads is just going to encourage piracy.
You can download from the Netflix windows app

Have not seen it on my Android TV app, on Shield TV Pro.
Don't believe its on the tv app. Only mobile & the windows app as far as I can tell.

On the windows app there is a sub menu for available for download where you can see what you can download.

Don't watch anything on my Laptop nor Desktop. But nice knowing that it is an option. Thanks.

Netflix Basic with Ads tier still missing a lot of content, just 24 hours from launch

Netflix Basic with Ads

The Netflix Basic with Ads tier launches tomorrow, and will cost $6.99/month.

Unmissable entertainment at unbeatable value: Basic with Ads will cost just $6.99 a month in the US and launch on November 3 at 9 am PT. Available in 12 countries: Basic with Ads will be available in Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Spain, the UK and the US.

Video quality will be a pathetic 720p, with ads amounting to 4-5 minutes per hour.

Lots of studios not yet signed

We learned back in July that the new tier would require new deals with content owners, and that the service would lack some of the content available in the more expensive packages.

Netflix claimed at the time that the “vast majority” of content would be available at launch, but with just 24 hours to go, a Wall Street Journal report calls that into question. It says that Netflix hasn’t yet reached agreement with five big studios.

Netflix continues to haggle with several major studios for the right to run ads against their content in the new service or put their content on the ad tier, according to people familiar with the matter […]

Among the studios with whom Netflix hasn’t yet finalized revised licensing agreements are Walt Disney, NBCUniversal, Sony Pictures, Warner Bros, and Lions Gate Entertainment, people familiar with the negotiations said.

Without these deals, a lot of popular Netflix content could be unavailable on the new tier, including:

  • Breaking Bad
  • Grey’s Anatomy
  • How to Get Away with Murder
  • The Crown
  • Cobra Kai

Based on the price and amount of adverts, will probably not help in retaining customers. Especially with the 720 resolution. Should be fun to see what shows they have on launch for the ad supported tier.
