Hi,

I wonder if anyone can help, I just had a 384 ADSL line installed, and signed up with allyoucaneat. I am using Windows XP Pro SP2

I am having problems viewing any web pages. I have setup the netgear dg834 router as per the instructions the allyoucaneat website. When I test the connection via the router web interface the router connects successfully and I get assigned an ip. I am able to successfully conduct dns tests via the routers web interface. However whenever I attempt to browse any websites, the browse attempts to connect to the website and then returns with a "page not found" error. The log in the router shows that a TCP packet is being sent from my machine to the web site ip, but I get no web page ?

Any ideas ?

Can you ping any websites? if you can then make sure your host file under windows is not stuffed just copy and paste what is in the file and ill tell you if its messed up just serach for it and remeber do a search for hidden files.

There might be a nother problem but thats where ill look first

Pinging

Hi,

Thanks for the reply... I am able to ping websites (although mostly I get no replies)

I have tried two different pc's and the same issue, so I'm not sure that it is a corrupt hosts file

Thanks

When you mostly dont get replies then your not connected

check your vpi and vci setting on your router Vpi is 8 and vci is 35 or
its the other way around but i know thats what the settings have to be, if they are wrong you will have a difficult time, and check under your router if there are any connect buttons and chek under wan settings you should get a ip once your connected

pinged sites

Hi,

I have pinged the likes of www.google.co.za and www.msn.co.za. When pinging the names get resolved to an ip address, which means that I am connecting to the dns and resolving names, but I get no ping replies from any of the websites

Thanks

Try to get a nother adsl account to test they might have some issues somewhere

then u are connect but what dns setting have they given you did you ty to get differnt setting ?

Hi, not sure if you know about this, but there is a hidden menu available for the Netgear which will allow you to set it as a modem only - and then you can initiate the PPPOE connection for your pc rather... It might help you to resolve the issues you are experiencing...

http://192.168.0.1/setup.cgi?next_file=mode.htm

Just replace the IP with the correct IP of your router.

DNS Settings

Hi,

The DNS Settings I've been told to use is
Primary 196.43.1.11
Secondary 196.25.1.11

I have not tried any other dns settings, do you some that I could try

Thanks

where did u enter the dns settings? in the router or under the windows tcp/ip? set the router as dhcp and let windows detct the settings for you remove the dns setting from windows and the router, then restart ure pc then do a ipconfig to check if router gave you an ip address then try to surf

dns settings

Hi,

I placed these dns settings on my router not in windows. where should I put them. Right now windows does not have any settings defined

Thanks

I had the same problem

With another netgear ADSL router. There was alot on their page, but the short of it is that you sometimes have DNS forwarding issues with these machines (not sure why, but it worked for a while then stopped working... I am inclined to believe that this is a Telkom issue, but can't confirm). To work around it, I manually entered the DNS server settings into TCP/IP of the workstations on the LAN. The main one I was given by the Telkom guys was 196.25.255.34, but I believe the others mentioned here should also work fine.

I know this is an old discussion but just wanted to say thanks - I spent three hours on the phone with telkom and my ISP and no one told me I could do this. So thanks to you i have interent again!
