I've just purchased a Netgear DG834 firewall/router, hooked it up and cant seem to get it to "connect". I have tried PPP over Ethernet and PPP over ATM...

When I test the connection (The account details entered are valid, it works with a Telkom ADSL modem) with PPP over ATM it tunes:

Connection time 00:00:00
Connecting to server Disconnect
Negotiation LCP is allowed to come up.
Authentication ---
Getting IP address ---

And then it stays like that...

When I try PPPoE it does this:

Connection time 00:00:00
Connecting to server Disconnect
Negotiation Initialize LCP.
Authentication ---
Getting IP address ---

and thats as far as it goes, I have checked the phone cable the little "ADSL Connection" light is green. Do I have to pop in some DNS's or change some settings cause I am loosing my mind at the moment.

Please help :p

This is the same router I've got, here are the settings you need:

BASIC SETTINGS:

Does Your Internet Connection Require A Login: Yes
Encapsulation: PPPoE (PPP over Ethernet)
Login: Your Username
Password: Your Password
Service Name: TelkomSA (you might be able to leave this blank)
Domain Name Server (DNS) Address: Get Automatically From ISP

ADSL SETTINGS:

Multiplexing Method: LLC-BASED
VPI: 8
VCI: 35

That should be all you need to ensure is set up, then just Apply for each option and restart the router, it should then proceed to connect. Have fun.

My service name is black (don't use Telkom as my ISP) and I've not had a problem, it seems.
I'm not sure about DNS settings either: I was given specific DNS addresses to use, but then Telkom gave me others. Not once have I been told to allow these to be atuo-detected though.

Telkom's servers automatically assign you DNS servers (if you are set up to automatically detect them). Even though a lot of ISP's might indicate for you to specify them, they do it automatically if you don't manually specify it - this also allows you to keep your DNS server list up to date rather than having to manually change it if your ISP changes it.

As for TelkomSA, it's very likely that this could be blank, however, when I asked Telkom for the exact settings (just so I knew exactly what to specify), that was the option they gave me. At the moment, with a single ADSL provider it's not required, however, when we start seeing more ADSL providers with their own DSLAM's, etc. (whenever THAT is), you may need to specify the service name.

Ah right OK, thanks for clarifying.

You wouldn't happen to know exactly what difference (if any) the 2 different sets of DNS numbers make, do you? I haven't noticed any performance difference between the set I was given by my ISP, and the set Telkom tell me to use when I call them up to say it's going slow-as-crap. Just wondered if there's a specific set I should be using all the time, or if none of it matters.

The first DNS number is the primary server, this is used on the first try, if however that server cannot be contacted after a certain timeout period, then the secondary DNS server is used. If neither servers work, then you get a DNS failure and can't find the site. Connection performance will only differ when initially resolving the IP address to a specific URL (ie. resolving www.microsoft.com, etc.) and won't improve your overall throughput. However, to ensure that you don't end up with two manually defined and non-working DNS servers (if, for example, your ISP decides to change their DNS server addresses), you should allow your DNS servers to be automatically assigned on connect.
