Netgear DG834 problems - can't connect

Hi everyone, hoping anyone else with this modem/router thing can help me out.

Not really a technical question as such, since it's not set-up yet (ADSL installation due in a a few days).

Anyway, in the box, along with the regular blue cables (the CAT5 cable and the 'phone cable') and the filter, there's a cable with a UK BT plug on one end, and an RJ11 plug on the other with a tag saying 'Filter' near that plug. There's also another cable that has 2 RJ11 plugs on it, one plug has just green and red wires visible and again has a 'Filter' tag wrapped round the wire near it, while the other end is just the same as the other cables (yellow, green, red, blue - in that order).

My question is, which cable(s) do I actually use? I've already been told that the filter it coems with won't work on SA phone lines but I've been given a guide on how to solder 2 pins on the PCB to get it to work. Other than that though, I've got no idea.

OK, just took another look, and the very small cable that connects from a UK phone socket to the filter has the same grren and red wires visible in it, so I assume that's where the same RJ11-plugged cable goes? I think I've figured it out from there.

One question I really have no idea about though: Is there a limit or recommendation to the length of cable between the filter and the modem, and/or the socket and filter? Reason I ask is because my phone socket is on the other side of the room, which involves passing the cable around the edge of the room, totalling more than 8 or 9 metres (the cable I use currently for my 56K is much, much longer though).

Thanks a lot for any help. [:)]

I installed the DG814 so I assume it's pretty much the same in terms of cabling and so on.

First- the filter supplied with the router does work, or at least mine does. When Telkom installs your line, they will simply leave you with a little box with two sockets. In one of these, plug in the one RJ11 and put the part labelled filter into the actual filter. I don't remember exactly and I'm not at the location where I did this installation, but you might have some comapatibility issues with the supplied cable and it is a simple case of using the correct combination of cables. The other end of the filter can then be used to connect your normal phone with a normal phone line. The actual phone cable is straight from the phone port on the router to the other socket in the Telkom-installed box i.e. it does not plug into the filter.

You will have at least one spare cable when you're done. It also took me a good few minutes to work out the cabling, but you have all the cables you need and it is just a matter of finding the correct combination.

HTH,

The trick is that the Netgear setup is wired according to the UK wiring standards, not the SA way of doing things.

You need to know that in the UK, they use the outside connectors (1,4)on the RJ-11, in South Africa, we use the inside pair (2,3)

Have a good look at the tips of your cabling that came with your modem. If the wiring is on (2,3), plug it into Telkom, if it is on (1,4) plug it into the filter.

Thanks to the Telkom techie who showed this to me!

Had the ADSL 'installed' today.

Problem is though, that it won't connect. I've put in all my ISP details, plus the Primary and Secondary DNS thingies, set it to PPPoE, but on the Test page, it just says something about LCP being down or unavailable or something like that, and won't connect. I've also noticed that the Internet light on the modem itself will flash orange, then turn solid green, then after 30 seconds or so it goes out, starts flashing orange again, goes solid green and so on.

Any ideas what the problem could be? I'll be calling Telkom on Friday to find out if the problem is here or there, but I've got no idea what's going on for the time being.
