Netgear DG834 sync issues

My netgear modem developed a bit of a problem recently, since about two weeks ago, it hasnt been able to sync for longer than 30-40 minutes;

It seems to lose sync then, rebooting the router doesnt help.. It has to stay off for 20-30 minutes before it'll sync again.

Telkom have checked the line, they say theres nothing wrong, and it appeared to be syncing fine with their modem..

Tried upgrading, degrading firmware, no luck..

Can only get it exchanged on Monday, but in the interim i've found a nice lil patch which appears to be working..

It involves an ice pack inside tissue paper on the router every 10 minutes for 5 minutes, I' havent lost sync for the past hour!!

Netgear DG routers have known ventilation issues ... you must put it on it's side i.e fit the two little feet and let it stand upright.

nivek - would you mind sharing your line stats - attenuation, noise margin etc. i've had a synch loss every now and then (once in 48 hours) and would just like to compare because as far as I can tell my stats indicate a very stable line and should never lose synch:

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 384 kbps 128 kbps
Line Attenuation 13 db 3 db
Noise Margin 30 db 28 db

I was initially using the netgear filter supplied with the router but since plugging the router directly into the wall alongside a Telkom filter synch losses have practically disappeared.

My router is also standing upright.

hey

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 384 kbps 128 kbps
Line Attenuation 33 db 11 db
Noise Margin 2 db 25 db

I've also got my router plugged directly into the wall, I thought the filter might be a problem

Since putting my router on its side as tibby suggested i still havent lost sync

Clearly a heat issue then.

The router is NOT supposed to be plugged into a filter! It must go straight into the wall.
The filter filters out the frequencies that the router uses to connect, so that the phone doesn't interfere with the router. If you were to plug the router into a filter then it would filter out the routers frequencies and it won't be able to connect or you would get really bad connection.

its more a splitter/filter combo with 1 port for the router and other for a phone

nivek your 2db downstream noise margin could also be a factor causing sync losses. but if you say that standing the router upright has mostly taken care of it then it probably was a heat issue.

for other dg834 users - been checking out some australian forums and it seems a lot of the guys reckon firmware versions 3.01.29 and 3.01.31 do a lot to improve line stats and performance and in some cases eliminate sync losses. these firmwares aren't directly available from netgear's site but read through these forums and decide for yourself if you want to try it out.

never buying netgear again tho !

I only buy Netgear :).

But they should not have used the same sized case design as they did for the older DG834 as the CPU used in the GT is clocked at 260Mhz compared to only 150Mhz of the older model.

Putting on it's side gives it adequate venting and problem solved.
