Netgear DG834GT router trashed and recovery tool not seeing router

I just tried to update the firmware on my router but it crashed and now my router is trashed - the test and power lights are blinking alternately.

I've done loads of research and done everything that people have suggested including running the Netgear recovery tool to flash the firmware. The problem is that the tool just does not see the router - it is plugged in. I've tried resetting it, holding the reset button in while switching it on etc etc and nothing works.

Please help - I really can't buy a new router now!

WHen you say the router is plugged in - is it directly plugged into your PC with a network cable or running through other network hubs? If the tool can't pick it up or you can't SSH into the hub IP then it's quite fubar

It's plugged in directly to the computer via ethernet cable as per instructions. The router sees the computer's connection because the light is on for that port and Windows say the LAN is connected. But the tool can't find the router.

And my network card also lights up when plugged into a router even when my PC is off. Your router's HDD is basically corrupt and you don't have a way to boot into a repair tool that works :)

Did you set a static IP on your PC?? If not, It's possible that you have an APIPA address so that possible why your PC cannot see the router...

The NetGear routers come factory set on the 192.168.0.1 range so make sure your pc is also in this range...

try a hard reset - press the reset button for > 30 secs. this should reload factory default settings.

set pc's ip4 settings to auto for ip, gateway and dns.

Then Power down both router & pc, then power on router and after lights stop flashing on the router, power on pc.

Once pc has powered on you should be able to ping router on the default address and open the router via ie using the same ip.

Hard reset doesn't work for bricked router due to bad firmware upgrade.

BUT the tool to wipe EEPROM and reinstall the firmware worked after zillions tries. My advice to anyone doing this - just keep trying.
