Netgear N300 router to N300 USB adapter

Hope someone here can explain to me why I only get a max of 72mbs connection speed between my new Netgear N300 router and a N300 USB network adapter connected to my Sony Laptop. I have setup the router to "Up to 300mbs" speed.
Any suggestions how to increase the speed?

What encryption are you using for your wireless network? 300mbps 802.11n requires WPA2-AES or open.

Secondly, how far away from your router is the laptop? I connect at full rate to my Linksys AP when around 3/4 metres away from it, but add a wall or two and it drops off fast.
