Called cellc yesterday and they actually sent out a tech this morning. He tested the signal here in Muizenberg and told me the problem was with the "something"(i cant remember the term he used) on the big red/white tower in military road. He said it was being replaced with a higher capacity "something" .I hope they are.

I thought it was just me. Got a new laptop and been enjoying the faster speeds untill recently. What is going on? Would be better off with my old 1.8meg vodacom card.
Bad results in Richwood and Sunningdale!!!:twisted::twisted:

Cellc probably have a VC 5gig contract. They then distribute that to us. Cap get hit quickly. Very dissapointed CELLC. Fix it.

Woosh pie in the sky

I live in McLeod Street Somerset West. Although I often connect at fast speeds I find online gaming impossible. Their routing is useless. That means you may connect at a fast speed to the nearest tower but there network connecting the tower to the rest of the internet is poor. I also often get a Johannesburg IP address so when I try to play a game on a server in Cape Town the ping is really slow like 900ms which results in such lag that it is impossible to play. I get faster pings to servers in the UK and USA. What sucks is the local internet connections between Johannesburg and Cape Town. I think CellC has bitten off more than they can chew. I suppose this is the internet you get from a poor cell phone operator who piggy backs on other cell phone operators networks. Kinda like taking your car to the hairdresser for a service.

Good news / Bad news

All,

Can you all who have problems please give me locations in which this is still an issue and I will have the team look into it.

Regards
Ron

The good news is that I have had no disconnects so far today (Midwood Avenue, Claremont 7708 in Cape Town, Cell IDs 40391 and 40081).

The bad news is that the network is getting slower and slower.

Slower and slower.... Cell C's only whoooosh is the earth passing us by when we're trying to use the internet....

I understand Cell C started doing some backbone upgrades around 2 weeks ago, i wonder if they forgot to turn the power back on.
I'm sure that they should also know by now, that there are a huge amount of unsattisfied client. I had to use my voda sim to make a skype call & open a webpage today without dropping the skype call.... is this 21.6mb connection. I think not.

took the liberty of doing a speedtest;

Cell C Sim - this is peer connection in Cape Town, speed test done to Cape Town (Webafrica)

http://www.speedtest.net/result/1156881345.png

Voda Sim - tested about 4 minutes later (as quick as it takes to swop the sim out, and get back online again)

http://www.speedtest.net/result/1156884131.png

Nothing running on the internet but only skype online, how can these connection vary so much using the same hardware, only difference is a sim card & network....

I'd really appreciate someone from Cell C replying on this post.

Gardens, Cape Town.

I'm also in Cape Town. I've had good speeds and decent stability barring the odd disconnect. But today everything is terribly slow. Like @Ratty I've not even been able to open Speedtest.net. WTF!?

I got my speed?stick beginning of December (live in Welgedacht area in Bellville). Originally had trouble getting it to work with my router - the cellc support desk was horrible (essentially they assume everyone calling them is an idiot). In any case - later I got hold of Winston who actually provided some support - they reprovisioned (or whatever) my sim and it worked quite well for a week or so (so hardware on my side is not the issue). The last week has been horrible - it disconnects, drops back to EDGE, doesn't have a signal etc. - this is true whether plugged into my router or my laptop directly.

Bottom line - I paid R3000. I have spent a significant amount of effort and time on sorting out issues. I have an unreliable, slow internet connection.

Right now Vodacom seems like a bargain - I will never buy a CellC product again.

What router do you have? If it's a TP Link then it's a widespread problem among other foumites using the 2 3G Routers of the same make. http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php/273744-Routers-to-use-with-Cell-C-UMTS-HSPA/page26

Draytek Vigor 2820. It works perfectly with Vodacom and has worked well with CellC for a while - SO IT IS NOT HARDWARE. I am at the point where I will chuck the CellC sim and use the E1820 modem along with a Vodacom sim - originally one think price is important, but that is only if reliability is a given.

Just sold my CellC modem at a loss. Apart from the issues I had, Cell C’s footprint is also bad. Vodacom worked in both instances and is once again providing me a solid internet connection plugged into my router. Next time I will likely look at a fixed line installation and use Vodacom when travelling.

also considering selling my whoosh at a loss now, to partially cover costs for an adsl modem.
since 17 december, i have not managed to use any months cap to the full, its virtually impossible
you cannot simply go and sit in front of your PC and use the internet, you have to try to get off EDGE first, and this can take hours, and then you're fed up.
i support cell c, but 3 months, its been way too long

Can't you use the 3G only setting? Or is your 3G signal too weak?

Also considering selling my Cell C. I have 90%+ signal and everything is slow (unlike December and early Jan). Something is broken on Cell C's side and they're just taking far too long 2 fix.

Very disappointed :(
