Hi there...

Does anybody knows about a program that you can monitor your network (LAN) traffic, see what IP address transmit what amount of data to what IP or something...?

I want to monitor a small network and most likely implement it sometime to a bigger network...

If you are at all serious about the network monitoring, using a Linux based system is your best bet. Check out www.ipcop.org. This is one of the leading network server thingies available and best yet, it doesn't cost you jack. All you need is an old computer (~~ 386, 256MB RAM) and an extra NIC.
This allows you to monitor usage, shape usage, has a cache proxy (so if 10ppl download one file it's only downloaded once).

I think I know what you are looking for, I myself am still trying to find something like it. Researching it isn't exactly easy either.

Look for Capsa by Colasoft, and Network Probe, can't remember the company name right now. None are free, but they are probably what you had in mind.

I've tried Paessler, and while it is ok, it's not exactly what you really need to see in depth to your network. If your devices don't support SNMP, it's not too useful.

I used NTOP, and that worked ok, but the moment you restarted your server or the program, you lost that information. Nor could you produce a report for management on traffic use.

Wish there was an open source equivalent to Capsa
