networking issue

hey guys...

have a quick question for you. My setup is as follows:
1x DLink DSL-2604 Router
1x DLink 8 port Gigabit swtich
1x Dlink DIR-600 WiFi Router (Running in AP mode)

Now, the issue I am having is as follows: I keep most of my media on my desktop (connected to the switch with a cable - Win 7 Ultimate X86) and access the files off my laptop (Sony VAIO VGN-TX37GP - Win XP Pro x86) connected via WiFi. I usually connect to the ADSL router as it is closer to my bedroom and gives better signal. Once in a while, the laptop stops being able to ping any of the other IP's on the network while connected to the ADSL router, but switching over to the DLink AP and I can connect away. While there is no connectivity to the other computers on the network, I can freely browse the internet etc.

The last time this happened, the problem went away after a day or 2 without me doing anything.

The 2 access points are connected via ethernet cable. The ADSL router performs DHCP functions, and assigns the laptop the same IP irrespective of which AP I connect to.

Any ideas on what this issue could be? I would really love to understand how this could be happening...

TIA

Nothing to do with fixed versus assigned IP addresses?

Dont think so... all IP's are assigned by the DLink ADSL router, with a couple of MAC addresses (desktop is always assigned the same addy) there to ensure that my IIS is accessible. But besides this, it works 99% of the time, then bombs out for a couple of days, and then goes back to normal.

Any other ideas?

That is pretty weird,
Next time it happens, i would dump on the interfaces of your laptop and on the desktop and see what the traffic is doing and how it looks.
Use an app like wireshark (or sometimes ur AV's firewall has the functionality to do a packet capture)
If you need help interpreting the results let me know

Well it sounds like a routing issue - on the router. Can see internet fine but not connect to any lan pc's.....user isolation springs to mind. Check if your wireless router (and AP for that matter) have that feature and what the settings are.

I can almost guarantee this is not a routing issue..
and most likely a software / filesharing issue...however, to confirm I would directly connect the machines to each other and connect

firstly, turn off firewalls on both machines (windows and AV firewalls)
can you ping each other?
If so, then you have messed up file sharing and thats it.

I can ping the windows7 machine and vice versa.

Must be filesharing then. Will return to the client tomorrow and try again.

Thanks 4 the help.
