New 2015 Hyundai i20 - Rear fog-light & reverse light placement error.

Yesterday I saw a new 2015 Hyundai i20 for the first time, and whilst driving behind it, noticed what appears to be a design anomaly regarding the rear fog-light & reverse light placement.

For the South African market, the fog-light is situated on the left corner of the bumper valance, with a corresponding reverse light placed on the right-hand corner. (see pictures below)

Surely this is incorrect, as this should be the placement for vehicles destined for markets where you drive on the right hand side of the road, and not for SA, where we drive on the left?

As far as I can recall, the fog light requirement is that it either has to be centrally mounted, like on the Toyota 86 or many Peugeot models, or it needs to be located on the driver's side of the vehicle, so you can tell on which side to overtake it, in poor visibility conditions.

Accordingly, the reverse light would then be on the side nearest the kerb, to also aid in parking as well.

This can clearly (pun intended) be seen in the facelift version of the previous Hyundai i20 model, which has a reverse light on the LEFT, and the fog-light on the RIGHT (the correct positions for a right-hand vehicle).

The original i20 model (pre-facelift) had reverse & fog-lights on both sides, so was OK for both right- or left-hand markets.

The only other car I have seen on SA roads which had the reverse & fog lights incorrectly fitted for a right-hand drive market, was the original Chevrolet Spark (based on the Daewoo Matiz body-shell), which also had the reverse light placed on the right and, depending on the model, either a red blanking cover or a fog-light placed on the left.

Compare this to two overseas versions, which either had two reverse lights in the bumper (no fog lights),

or with redesigned tail-light lenses fitted with two reverse lights, and either blanking slots or two rear fog-lights fitted in the bumper, depending on the model specification.

Does anyone know what the legal requirements (if any) actually are for single rear fog-light placement on vehicles sold in SA, as the regulations, as posted in the link below, are vague in this respect, stating only the following requirements:

"Fog lamps

163. (1) A motor vehicle may be equipped at the front and at the rear or at the front or rear with--

one fog lamp; or
two fog lamps, one on each side of the longitudinal centre-line of the motor vehicle."
