I was upgraded yesterday mid-afternoon, at which point I was getting speeds in excess of 450kb/sec (this is all on telkom's dsl speed test page).

This morning when I woke up I tested my speed and I was getting around 30kb/sec. After proclaiming WTF?! at the top of my lungs, I reset my router. This seemed to speed things up and I was back to a decent 350kb/sec.

Now I have just gotten back from gym only to test my line speed and get 50kb/sec. :(

I have no problem with not getting full 4mb speed all the time, but surely having it less than half of 1mb speed (the speed I originally paid for) is a bit lame? My line was perfect at 1mb, never going below 850kbits/sec, now that I have been "upgraded" it fluctuates so much that one moment I am getting 10kb/sec and the next I am getting 400. I would rather have a set speed of like 250kb/sec than one that is constantly fluctuating.

What the hell is going on here telkom?

seems like you are participating in a trial. sorry to be blunt.

same like beta software, if it works, yay...if it doesnt, dont complain.

if it is a proper trial, they wouldve given participants someone to contact to report problems to.

Well im also gonna complain......my work line has gone from a respectable 1024 line to a 192 line....and that is no joke, the telkom speed test is calculating it anywhere from 192- 300....how did this happen overnight????

werner, I'm not complaining about not getting 4mb speed. I understand the concept of a trial, but I do not believe that, by being put into a trial by default with no option or say in the matter, I should have my 1mb line for which I pay R600 a month for suddenly splutter about at speeds of a 384 line simply because their "trial" is not working properly. I am paying for a 1mbit connection, and thus I expect a 1mbit connection, nothing less, as that is what I have become accustomed to in the past.

Agreed - you shouldn't be worse off today than you were yesterday. Perhaps you router isnt coping? Kick up a fuss so they know you're having problems.

They have - its called customer service.

You're lucky pal, my 1024 line is showing between 30-55 on the telscum speed test!! Logged a fault just now, don't know how long before anything gets done. As a matter of interest, I am using a Belkin modem/router which has served me just fine up to now. What are you using?

Way to go telscum. We all knew a free upgrade from 1Mbit to 4Mbit is too good to be true.

Now they take congested exchanges and say "Hey, let's quadruple the ammount of strain we put on them. Also many 512K and 382K ppl will want to upgrade to the 4Mbit so lets just see how far we can push those state-of-the-art exchanges!"

Stupid, STUPID bloody telscum.

That's the entire idea behind the trial (maybe the reasoning has been lost at some point), the idea is to bump a good portion of their users up to 4mbits so that they can see how their network will in fact deal with it, and then improve it appropriately.

Those who expected > 1mbit right from the get go (and consistently > 1mbit) were expecting way too much. However that said, getting consistently worse speeds than you were before the upgrade do have to be addressed immediately, and for that I would definitely contact Telkom ADSL support.

Are you kidding me - speak for yourself cos I'm loving the extra speed.

For example - in the time it takes multichoice just to show all their ads I can download a clean copy of the latest season of the same show.

EDIT - not that I would ever do something like that ;)

Could be a fault on Telkom's side....With all the maintenance going on ( upgrading to 4mb etc, i think your prob won't last long )

The strange thing is I get fast speeds according to the Telkom and Gamco speed tests, if I use the SAOL speed test it shows as a 1mb line, most downloads from international sites are no faster than before the "upgrade"

This is cause when triple play launches it will be hosting movies and what not on a local server and thus they prob throttling international [although segmented downloads indicate full speed] so all they need stable is local right now.

Hallo guys, haven't posted for a while...but here I am. In all my ignorance I upgraded to 1mbit to 'test' it and now I see its 4mbit. I think this will be local for now only. They - being hellkom - will in your wildest wet dreams not give you 4mbit international. This is to test locally content delivery me thinks... just my 2 cents worth.

International is included in the 4mbit, however, seeing it is a trial you *cannot* realistically expect it to be a completely smooth experience. Just to reiterate, this is *not* only local, anyone with the 4mbit upgrade would tell you that through some simple download tests.
