Douglas Reed, MD of Datapro, welcomes a per-gigabyte billing pricing structure. He says that per usage billing is the way forward as it helps to ensure that users get the service they pay for

Bloody Hell Reed, you know better than that!!!!

Remember, the per gig price has to still be competative against the MTN, VDC, and iBurst offerings or the pricing model it sunk before its started.

I couldn't believe that someone could actually manage to make the pricing of this service worse, but then I remembered that it's Telkom we're talking about.

If they are allowed to do this, then that will instantly set the state of broadband in this country back several years, practically wiping out any progress made, and destroying the one nice thing about the ADSL service (uncapped local).

I do hope that ICASA turn those "findings" into actions fairly soon, as we really need them.

One other thing: If I recall correctly, Telkom said that they weren't going to contest ICASA's findings (other than the dropping away of line rental), so what would be the rationale of capping local, when ICASA would just force Telkom to uncap it again?

How do you justify bandwidth costing what it does now, let alone what they are proposing to charge is beyond me.
What sort of profit margin youi think they would be making on a 30gig account retailing for R1250pm, I mean common what a joke. I wanna see them get this right. Never happen.

OMG I almost fell off my chair! WTF is going on you fu©king Telkom ©unts? R1620 (excl. VAT) for 30GB is beyond excessive. I hope you all die and burn in HELL!

I remember thinking of getting ADSL but I clearly won't be able to afford it. Pimpin my ride will actually cost less if I pay installments.

The big question, is was Douglas Reed taken out of context? Did he know of the R60/GB or was he expecting WAY less?

I'm shocked.

10 x more expensive than the reported rate for New Zeeland.

Obviously South Africa is no place for a communications intensive industry.

You dont read too well dude ... article says 30gig account is R1620 wholesale ex. VAT. Add 20% markup & VAT, and you got R 2216.16 p/m

Time for a consumer boycott. I understand that business cannot partake in a consumer boycott, but private individuals do not really need Telkom's crap for a month and it should hurt them tremendously!

Hi Alaincraven

I spoke to Douglas and he simply welcomed the new structure and not the specific pricing. His main concern is that a small group of high capacity users can impact negatively on the majority of standard users. From an ISP’s perspective it does make sense…

Maybe it does, but charging R1620+VAT+markup for 30GB is retarded

I think I remember reading in one of the many quotes by Steve White that it would be an unfortunate side-effect of the new billing system.

Riiiiiight. Like they didn't plan for it in any way.

There is no justification that they can give for capping local, or for charging the same rates for local as for international. They can differentiate between the two, and local costs them practically nothing.

those are all wireless services and as such can be expected to cost a bit more. ADSL is a f@cken wired service. 30gigs for R1600+??wtf? u cannot have a cricketer competing against a brazilian superstar in a game of soccer, therefore u cannot compare adsl competing against the wireless providers. this is totally outrageous, and i hope icasa have something to say about this. this is almost a 900% increase in what we're currently paying...how do you justify a 900% increase? which kind of business operates that way. now im pissed off *puts heavy gangster rap on, feels like whipping some telkom @ss*
