New ADSL pricing structure on its way

I have this strong feeling that Telkom is using the FUD (fear, uncertainty & doubt) strategy to try and neutralise us. They must have picked it up from Microsoft who use it very effectively to stem the Linux tidal wave. Straight after the ADSL report was released by ICASA we start getting anonymous tip-offs about drastic price increases, new members with strange IP addresses appear on the forum making controversial statements, we hear about a “Telkom Task Force” that is going around closing down WISP’s. The information is always vague, confusing and never verifiable… no names of people, places or companies is ever provided. It gets us all very worked up and keeps us so busy speculating that we don’t realise that we are going around in circles and not getting anything constructive done.

Now here is a solution

The problem with all South Africans are, they discuss these matters among themselves or in forums like these. I dont believe this kind of **** is tollerated in other countries. Here, the petrol price goes up and we just gladly pay up, complaining amongst each other but still paying up. Later we dont even complain anymore. We just go with the flow and pay as we go. I'm sure Telkom in another country wont survive. They would be bombed to f**k and gone. We as a nation should stand up together and get rid of these bastards.
After all its OUR country. We want what we want not the **** we're forced to accept. So lets stand up as a nation. Thats the one and only solution.

Telkom comes from the apartheid error. I wonder why they're still in control.

MWAHAHAHA!!! And now it sounds like a Black man speaking with forked tongue! If anybody wanted any evidence that this is not a racially exclusive forum, these statements provide some proof... :D :D

Bandwidth theft

Over the weekend was on laptop, 56 k dialup. I caught a dialer, only found out because someone purporting to be from Telkom phoned today to report R67 worth of international phone calls during the period (and honest I wasnt direct dialling into porn sites) Its interesting to note that Telkom was monitoring the situation. How they did this and it's implications regarding privacy are also an issue. How did they identify the disconnect from 086007249 to the overseas number as being irregular? Big brother is really out there.
Of more relevance to this forum is the implications of bandwidth theft with the new billing system. Has Telkom thought thru theft of user names and passwords. If a dialler can be installed on my computer so easily surely key loggers must be out there. What increased security is envisaged?

Telkom's response would be: it's your computer and not our problem.

Highly irate

Posting my copy from another thread (don't want to retype this):

I'm very tempted to cuss and loose my cool on this "punitively high priced per gb model" (like bwana said) - because that's exactly what it is.

PEAPOD let's do it. I stay in Hermanus, and I will personally go to ALL the internet cafe's and everyone I know that has ADSL and organize them to fax their complaints to the ICASA and the president. I will even get the internet cafes and companies to sponsor an advertisement in the local paper (if they'll allow me to publish it) informing the ADSL and public on Telkom's proposed billing system.

This is utter crap, I WILL HAVE to CANCEL my ADSL, as I won't be able to afford it anymore. I'm a web developer and I need broadband access since I work for a small company in the U.S. I will have to move to Cape Town and get iBurst or MyWireless since it's not offered in my area yet.

We don't have a TV in our apartment, but choose rather to stream TV. So according to Telkom's logic, I'm abusing the network - utter crap! This is one of the reasons why broadband was created: streaming audio/video. NO FLIPPIN' OTHER COUNTRY IN THE WORLD (YES NO FLIPPIN' COUNTRY) charges users on a per GB system. Caps that are in place in some countries (15-30GB caps) are charged according to the flat rate for using ADSL. This is ridiculous, absurb, unreasonable. Any company that says this is a good idea is blacklisted in my books as far as I'm concerned; and I will make a point of mentioning their names in any telecom conversations I have with collegues and peers.

Telkom promoted ISDN a while back with a FICTICIOUS ad that ASA (advertising standards authority) forced them to withdraw on grounds of false advertising. You guys all probably know what I'm talking about. They had an actor play a doctor who was doing surgery on a patient in Tanzania over an ISDN line. UTTER ........!!! Imagine doing this kind of thing on a per GB billing system!!!!!!!!

Telkom is truely SA's handbrake (mentioned by one of the previous users). They ARE ruining technological development in this country!

Anyways, I've finished venting for now (for now!). Might be a good idea to contact Rudolph and getting something setup on the home page or maybe in headers or footers in the forums with a link to information on this and action for us ADSL users to take.
Peapod especially the forms you suggested be created for faxing to ICASA and the president. We could have the fax numbers included and these documents on the site somewhere.

Keyloggers are out there, big time. A lot of shady sites (not just porn) have these things on, best thing to do, run spyware checker everyday if you do a lot of surfing or at least once a week. I work for a security company that sells software that checks for spyware (not adware) and believe you me, it is scary what you find out there.

well this is how i feel about this situation..

Lonegunman has done what i wanted to do...beat me to it.
He contacted ICASA about the per gig solution.
To his amazement ICASA person that he spoke to didnt know about this implementation. Her words were "flabbergasted".
Now if ICASA dont know about it then sure as hell they arnt going to impelement it without incuring law suites.

My point is that they are only using this as a scare tactic.

Well this sucks. i have been with a wireless isp for some time now and have recently decided to upgrade to 512adsl with a 30gig cap. i ordered about a week ago. now i see all this $hit? i heard the rumors and my first reaction was..no way..they wouldnt get away with it. capping local? R2000+ for a 30 gig acc? Hardcapping? can telkom really domin8 like this? being a n00b i also dont know how this is gonna effect "uncapped" users? MWeb is ofering a "uncapped" shaped acc for something like R1400/month? downside for me is 1 concurrent connection only. damn..was planing on piggy backing from home :)
