New Amazon Africa headquarters to be based at new Cape Town development

Hold up guys, you are aware this HQ is purely for the Dev stuff... this is not about Amazon actually operating in Africa as a retail entity.

Yes, but it will be their legal trading entity in SA. I don't know why some are disturbed that it will open in Cape Town and not in their own backyard. As said, Musk is breaking the USA Silicon Valley status quo by urging US tech enterprises to migrate to Texas.

Does it really matter that all these tech giants in SA must look at each other through their windows?

Its been their legal trading entity for ages though, all this is really is a new location because the existing ones are tapped out from a space point of view really.

But yeah, as for the location and why people are getting upset or questioning, its baffling? A company will choose a location for their own reasons.

sure plenty of other considerations went into the decision : ....one big one ....seeing City of Cape Town, set to become the first metro to forego Eskom power cuts.... could have been a major plus

Because @eg2505 loves to bitch and moan about everything.

I'd also have had operations in CT if I were Amazon. It makes more sense.

if thats really true, then why open it at all?
WFH is a real thing, all these Dev guys would love to sit at home drink their own coffee and stay in Pajamas all day while coding.

only reason you need a office is to store stock, or maybe somewhere where things can be mailed to you and sent out from there.
and we have yet to see a fulfillment center open in SA, unless you count the takealot warehouse in JHB.

but why CPT? couldn't they have found a place in Sandton/Midrand like all the other global giants in JHB?

Because JHB is slowly falling apart. Cape Town has issues but most stuff here still works.

Also, we're one stage lower when load shedding kicks in, which I'm sure they factored into their decision.

I still don't know why you are being sour about this being in Cape Town?

I hope they’re not building that over the driving range.

That area also floods at least once a year, they may want to build dykes.

load shedding not being a factor for these megacorps, that have their own gennies most of the time,
and if JHB is falling to pieces , they why isn't companies like Oracle or Didata or Adapt IT or any number of the big corporate's leaving JHB to set up in CPT?

Because they're already established there and have adapted to that space. They've probably also done the number crunching and seen that it's too expensive to move out of JHB right now (that might change if infrastructure collapse and crime continues to escalate).

If you're starting something new why build it in a place where there are so many problems when you can quite honestly build it in a place with less issues?

so Durban isnt big enough?
and all the others that opened in JHB are not innovative?

You've got to be joking with Durbz?

I say this as someone from here.

Gonna be real hard attracting the best talent.

Cape Town and its first world life style much better prospects.

so Microsoft being based in Bryanston right next to Didata is just a mistake, they should all just move to CPT?
when we know that isnt the case.
Yeah a huge mistake even Durban makes more sense than Gauteng.

I just dont get why CPT, when so many others stayed quite happily in JHB.
I do understand Amazon was always a CPT based operation, that part I get, if reluctantly.
Because they have an inordinate amount of employees already working for them in CPT.. chances are, they may be merging existing space into this new development and it's not cost effective to pay for all those employees to move to whatever new city you would want them to setup their new shop in..

Amazon already have a very big customer and technical support service based in CT and that was quite extensive 10 years ago. Since then, it has only grown as they have based more Operating Units support here in CT. Considering that, why would they uproot and move their operations anywhere else.
