Apart from the upgrade, Apple has also announced a price cut on their iMacs. The 20-inch iMac now starts at just $1,199 – or R 8,443 - $300 less than the previous 20-inch model. The 24-inch iMac starts at just $1,799 – or R 12,669 - $200 less than the previous 24-inch model.

Well there we go, Core rip us all a new one all over again. Its probably cheaper to import the machine on you own...

Actually Core drive me mad, they're ripping the arse out of it, and pulling a typical SA trick. For R9k ALOT more people would buy an iMac and they would make more money in the long run.

Well I think that just seals it.

R4k cheaper to import the thing yourself (excluding duties) than buying from Core.

Its complete codswallop if you ask me.

bwana : Is the warranty honestly worth R4k to Core tho, because I'm guessing in the long run its a cost thats absorbed by Apple and not them.

I'm VERY VERY tempted to import a Macbook Pro since they're about R3k less (including shipping)

AFAIK - they are paid by apple for warranty work but regrettably most desktops are not covered by apples worldwide warranty (though oddly enough my Mini was so I would check just to make sure.) B&H also offers their own worldwide warranty on many of the stuff they sell - perhaps that might be an option?

Good news for you though - all portables - like the iPod, MB and MBP are covered by Apple's worldwide warranty so there's no reason not to import one.

\o/.... Cool..

I have a feeling I'll be in the states at some point in the not to distant future so I will probably toddle into an Apple store there and purchase one.

Odd that the desktops aren't necessarily covered by the worldwide warranty, I'd expect the macpro and iMac to be covered.... Oh well, its not like I can afford a Mac Pro unfortunately.

Wouldnt the duties and VAT that you would have to pay wipe out the 4K. the VAT alone is +/- 2K.

Not sure if computers are duty free, but may still be worth it.

No - dont be silly - why spend extra money if you dont have to?

I think their reasoning behind the worldwide warranty is because they want to protect their international distribution channels. If you look at the UK prices they're as bad as, if not worse than, ours! Also, most people dont travel with an iMac :)

Computers are Duty free iirc...

And yeah the VAT would add to the price, but don't forget, we're add the VAT onto that order by shipping, so Core is making R4k +- over Apples RETAIL price, and not the price that Core are getting the equipment for.

Nah, wouldn't buy an iMac overseas... I'd buy a Macbook Pro.. :)

I've always wanted a Mac, they've always just been out of reach price wise.

What I'm suggesting is that you dont walk into a apple store and buy one.

EDIT - buy it from amazon and have it shipped to where you'll be staying and you will save yourself having to pay sales tax (in NY thats over 8% that they would add at the counter) http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html?ie=UTF8&nodeId=468512#freedom

Ahhh ok.

Well I will definately bow to your greater experience. Where should I purchase one from then when I do toddle over the pond?

Core are just like ever other South African company: useless ripoffs.

As per my above post make sure you choose Amazon itself and not another company that Amazon handles. If a company has a physical store in the state where they're delivering to you'll get taxed. :(

Core is useless

What's really astounding is that by raising the profit margin to such an extent, they are perpetuating the idea that mac is a tremendously expensive machine. They're shooting themselves in the foot. If they lowered their margins, they would sell more mac's and actually spread the popularity of the brand. Core's only strategy is to rip the consumer for all they're worth.

It's really sad that a forward thinking company like Apple is represented by such a bunch of dimwits in South Africa.

And don't even get me started about their repair center.
