New Apple MacBook Pro and Air – Pricing for South Africa

iStore South Africa has released pricing for the new Apple MacBook Pro and MacBook Air notebooks as part of a pre-order campaign.

The new Apple MacBook devices use the Apple M1 chipset, which Apple said delivers significant performance and power efficiency improvements over the previous generation.

The 13-inch Apple MacBook Air delivers up to five-times the graphics performance of the previous generation thanks to the Apple M1 chipset.

iStore and their specs. No 16GB version available without special order?

Yip - you have to special order. It's easy though... I special ordered my 2019 MBP with 32GB of RAM. Only took a week for it to arrive. Besides the extra hassle, their service is actually great.

I've done a custom order for a MBP through iStore in 2012 and then again in 2019. Both times took 6 weeks.

Pricing is pretty decent, but I'll wait for 2nd gen Apple M1 processors if you can.

Never buy 1st gen Apple products.

Apple has a history of problems with the 1st gen of all their new product lines (1st gen Macbook Pro Retina defects, 1st Gen butterfly keyboards, 1st gen 16" MacBook Pro thermals, 1st gen iMac Pro T2 chip failures, 1st gen Airpods audio quality...)

They refine the design come 2nd iteration. Also a lot more apps will be native ARM ready by then.

Geekbech scores are useless. How long does it take to encode a video?

Video encoding?

How long is a piece of string? What application? What codec, what GPU? CUDA optimised or OpenCL?
Also are you talking Apple optimised Final Cut performance differences, HandBrake, or CUDA heavy Adobe Premiere Pro?

Modern H.264 / H.265 video encoding is highly GPU dependent in all modern applications. Intermediary codecs such as Cineform and ProRes rely on the CPU more but are not generally used in benchmarks.

R5K for an additional 256GB storage. That is why I don't buy apple. You want to upspec your machine and you pay through the nose.

Well same applies to other name brands as well, samsung phones get quite nuts between the different space versions, how do you motivate that increase in price ?

Apple is definitely not the only culprit here, I tend to avoid any thing name brand these days, I can't motivate the absurd prices differences.

Whingers will whinge : regarding the RAM : the M1 RAM does not work like RAM on an Intel machine.
M1 8Gig is a different animal......don't be a Trumpet...go read up before sounding off....may actually learn something new.

Apple, for a company who: ignore customer needs regarding flexibility inside their products..soldered this and that, can't swop out batteries, no headphone jack or charger, glass screen, and and and, have made a lot of money, sold amazing amounts of products, and been copied by all and sundry.
Why anyone would copy Apple is beyond me?
Give me a 25-30 mm thick Windows dumbbell with a sh tty screen anyday....I'd rather have arm muscles than brain muscles.

Beware people, those of us old enough to remember what happened when Apple transitioned from an IBM CPU to Intel, it took months to years before the software ecosystem caught up.

Just make sure you are not paying to be part of a Beta program

Exactly.

Linus has some good insight why this is more hype than anything else, and for the professional user - the M1 isn't the answer (yet).
