New ATM skimmers that sit inside the card slot are virtually impossible to detect

Skimmers have been used by crooks for years to steal credit and debit card information during ATM transactions. The devices have traditionally been somewhat easy to spot given their sheer size but as technology advances and electronics get smaller, so too do ATM skimmers.

Krebs on Security recently took a look at some miniaturized fraud devices that were discovered to be in use at various ATMs across Europe this year. Whereas previous implementations were designed to fit on top of a machine's existing card slot, revised units like the one pictured below actually lie inside the card slot which makes them almost impossible to spot.

Once your card is inserted, the device swipes the magnetic strip to steal your credentials. But what about the PIN number associated with the card? A tiny spy camera used in conjunction with the slot skimmer was able to capture each user's PIN number . As shown below, a false fascia was placed just above the keypad with a tiny hole to let the camera see as you type.

As Krebs points out, one of the easiest ways to prevent such theft is to simply place your other hand over the keypad as you enter your PIN. Most users simply think that if nobody is around, nobody is watching. Of course that's not always the case as this example shows that cameras can be lurking virtually anywhere.
It's an effective precaution that can be used virtually anywhere you use your debit or credit card and need to enter a PIN.

I use my wallet.
Same. New cameras are sometimes in the should plastic to the left & right of the keypad (ironically there to block the view)...so I think I'll do hand going forward as the wallet doesn't always fit between the shield things. Hope that sketchy description makes sense. :/

Perhaps we should move away from cash and use cards, faster simpler and less disease riddled.

I always motion my hand over an extra digit as well before completely covering up. I do get my pin wrong sometimes when covering up.

Why don't people draw cash from the till? So much easier

1. "Oh but sir my till doesn't have that amount of cash"

2. Or sign on door -
Operating hours: 09:00 to 19:00
- and my work hours 08:00 to 18:00 (so I leave for work before 7 and get back in home suburb after 7)

3. I'm lucky enough see the inside Checkers or PicknPay twice a month, often just once. Need to draw money about 4 times a month. I try to draw once or twice I'll get excuse 1.

Your solutions to the above involving tellers?

My card got skimmed at a petrol station.

Bugger had a fake card machine that looked legit. I went through the process of entering my pin, the machine printed a slip saying "No connection" so the guy said the machine wasn't working and got another card machine (The real one.) and the transaction went through.

It's a bugger. You really don't think twice when a card machine doesn't work at a petrol station. Next thing you know some scumbag is using a cloned copy of your card in Botswana to buy shoes.

I have a theory that this stuff is the result of syndicates that work an area and move on in a few days. It really doesn't help to avoid a petrol station because a week later they will just be targetting another.

I'm not going to mention names but it was a major petrol station on a national road outside of Cape Town. It was also on a long weekend when there was a queue of close to 50 cars waiting to fill up.

I always use my card and hardly ever draw cash. When I do I cover up the pin entering phase of the transaction. But you can never be too careful I guess.

I use poverty as a means of preventing anyone from taking money out of my accounts.

^ that is one way. I keep a separate account with max R2k in it for card transactions and if I know I am going to buy something that day for more, just transfer the money into it

Been all over the world with a credit or debit card and SA is the only place where I had an attempt at withdrawing cash. Thieves tried to draw R2000 but by then the available balance was about R300

I use Capitec Bank. They don't mind how many card-linked accounts you have
