New ATM skimmers that sit inside the card slot are virtually impossible to detect

^ that is one way. I keep a separate account with max R2k in it for card transactions and if I know I am going to buy something that day for more, just transfer the money into it

Been all over the world with a credit or debit card and SA is the only place where I had an attempt at withdrawing cash. Thieves tried to draw R2000 but by then the available balance was about R300

I use Capitec Bank. They don't mind how many card-linked accounts you have

That is quite a good idea, I must actually look into doing that

Yeap I also have two accounts, one for my usual transactions, and another more substantial one. At the end of the month I only have about 2k left in the main one so damage won't be too bad.

Said it before and also mentioned by Chrisc above...

Also only keep around 2K in my main Capitec account and the bulk of my cash funds in the 4 savings accounts. Payments on your Capitec card only works on the main account i.e. funds from the sub accounts cannot be used and or accessed, you have to transfer it to the main account in order to use it and that is quick and easy especially with the new banking app.

So if my card does get cloned then I stand to lose max R2k. Best of all is that you can make payments like for example your salary directly to one of the sub accounts. Each sub account comes with their own account number so you can ask for your salary to be paid into the one sub account and then move it as and when needed to the main account.

I have wondered, do you know if can one have debit orders run from a sub account?

Have no debit orders so not sure. Will fire off a mail quickly to them and ask and report back

I just checked on the mobile app. I went into payments and selected Recurring Payments and managed to set one up using my one sub account as the account from where the payment must be made.

So not sure about debit orders but from this it seems like you can setup your own kind of debit order for recurring payments from a sub account. Did email Capitec, will post their response on the debit orders from sub accounts question.

Salary on one account, debit orders on another (all mine are fixed sums so if any one tries to pull funny business its their fault) and then the cards account. Then there are still two account left.

Just received reply back from Capitec, see below:

Please see below what you may use your Global one banking facility for:
· Daily Savings Transaction Account (Primary savings account)
This account is a transactional account, which means your salary may be deposited in this account and debit orders/ stop orders may run from this account.
· Savings Plan (Sub accounts)
This offers a fixed or flexible savings product in which you can save your money towards a particular goal at excellent savings rates.
Should you have any further queries in this regard, you are more than welcome to contact client care on 0860 10 20 43.

So seems like no debit orders can be done on the sub account. I'm however going to setup a recurring payment [as mentioned earlier] on my one sub account and see whether it works. Guess it will as its just a payment and not a real debit order.

I saw a few pics where they place another keypad over the existing one. In mobile so can't get links now. In this case holding your hand over they keypad is of no use.

I always motion my hand over an extra digit as well before completely covering up. I do get my pin wrong sometimes when covering up.

Same, the last 2 digits I know exactly where they are so put one hand over the other and punch them in.

It is scary how ATM fraud is advancing :(

I draw from the cashiers at Spar, PicknPay, etc....if I do use an ATM, I cover the keypad with my wallet.

I had a weird incident about 4 weeks ago, I go to the Standard Bank ATM, I inserted my card, it was then asking me for a voucher number instead of a pin....it didn't give me time to type anything in, then my card didn't eject (it got swallowed). I did call the bank immediately and asked them to cancel my debit card.

I'm sure this was one of those scams...it was looking so shady...

I usually withdraw cash at Checkers tills. Have there been any reports about scams at the tills? Seems fairly safe to me, you are by yourself, in the open and the cashier cannot see what you are keying in. Always busy and lots of people and supervisors hovering about the place

1. "Oh but sir my till doesn't have that amount of cash"

2. Or sign on door -
Operating hours: 09:00 to 19:00
- and my work hours 08:00 to 18:00 (so I leave for work before 7 and get back in home suburb after 7)

3. I'm lucky enough see the inside Checkers or PicknPay twice a month, often just once. Need to draw money about 4 times a month. I try to draw once or twice I'll get excuse 1.

Your solutions to the above involving tellers?

Sorry, not my problem. Please get a manager. Hello manager, please give me my money . Simple.

Checkers managers seem to be more "hands-on" nowadays. I overheard a similar conversation to the above, where the cashier was being a bit difficult and he stepped forward and sorted it out. At the end, he asked the cashier to be more aware of what she was doing and not take the lazy route out
