www.rumba.co.za is set to launch 1 May according to ITweb
http://www.itweb.co.za/sections/internet/2004/0404201255.asp
They offer ISDN and dialup at the same price for R45pm. The 1st 1000 subscribers get it at R41pm. No contract required.

Hi All

Reading it, it just felt a bit strange, so I dug a bit deeper...guess what ? www.rumba.co.za is owned by a crowd called Yournet; and www.yournet.co.za is owned by?...take a wild guess ? Yeah....Telkom
1. Domain Owner: Telkom SA [:D]
2. Owner Postal: Private Bag X125, Halfway House, 1685

What?, obviously they want to grab as many clients as they can get their hands onto before the SNO gets their act together. I say this is unfair towards other ISP's who's really struggling to keep head above water...they are already in huge trouble with Icasa for anti competitive behavior and here they go and pull something like this?

Even if they offer me ADSL @ R100.00 per month, I won't go for it... just to proof a point.

Cheers

So by your reasoning it's better to pay telkom R800 a month for ADSL, rather than R100 a month, to prove a point. What's exactly would you be proving? [?] MyADSL is fighting for amongst other things, a lowering in Telkom charges. ADSL @ R100.00 is exactly the kind of thing we're pushing for. Affordable broadband as offered in other countries.

Hi Martin

Just to give you a wakeup call...there are more than 200 ISP's in South Africa and ironicly all of them or at least 90% of them has to make use of Telkom's infrastructure and for them (Telkom) to take low blow like this just for more clients could just put most ISP's out of bussiness. If you like the old S.A that's just fine with me...I in turn would lke to see some stiff competition for Telkom.

I agree, the cheaper the better. Of course we want competition for Telkom, but we also want to see them lowering their prices.

Also this is only 56k dialup or 64k ISDN. Both "old" technologies and should not even be considered for the serious nethead.

Of course I don't look busy.....I did it right the first time.

Hi Guztro

I see that Rumba responded to your observation (see the latest posting in the news section). An interesting issue regarding account prices!

RPM,

You have to admit that the www.rumba.co.za debacle is kinda fishy... [)]

The trail runs from one point to the other and then just suddenly disappears for some reason. Plausable deniablity I think they call it...

Cheers
Ant

This place is dodgey... and i quote

"Question: What about viruses?

Answer: Rumba provides full virus scanning using Mcarthy scanning library which is updated on a daily basis. Therefore you will not receive viruses in any mail or attachment through Rumba"

Ooook good to hear LOL

Just because Telkom owns the domain doesn't mean that they're doing anything more than providing web hosting services, or whatever.

Maybe it's a reference to Senator Joe McCarthy. (You know, the guy that spearheaded the whole communist witch-hunt thing.)
