Hi,
I am switching jobs and having a corporate contract for years I now need to apply for my own contract and expense with the new employer. Nothing special you would think but here it comes. So I went to a Vodacom shop (in Green Point CPT) and handed in all my papers (the usual, bank statements, salary slip, ID etc). This was last week and eventually application got "declined". They won't tell you, you eventually have to go back into the shop to find out. Reason for reject and here it comes: I am not listed with the credit bureau. Yes thats right, I don't have a car financed and other than the bond on my house, I don't have any debt outstanding.
So has anyone else experienced this because this sounds to me its better to have loads of debt BEFORE Vodacom approves you ? Its insane !
Obviously the people in the shop don't phone you back and don't seem to care too much about their customers.

What's insane is signing up for a 24 month contract in this day and age. Switch to prepaid, you won't regret it.

Yeah, tell me about it. Even if you are approved, it's on a low profile meaning el-cheapo handsets. Anyways, I'll just go get a Hisense H3, P8 lite or Xperia E4g cash.

They made a mistake. If you have a bond, you will be on the credit bureau

Renee, here's a true story.

Back when I started my first job, I rushed into my nearest Vodacom to apply for a contract. Finally I was earning Real Money, and could easily afford it (even though I wasn't earning a King's wage).

Vodacom declined me, twice. Reason? No credit history.

I went across to MTN, applied and got approved immediately. MTN subsequently scored massively off that approval, as I went through about six successive contracts with them (between paying for my wife and myself).

In that time, I grew up and got increasingly exposed to credit. I got a clothing account (and closed it after a while). I got a car loan, then another, then another. I got an overdraft, a bank loan, two credit cards, another overdraft. Obviously not all simultaneously lol!

I've been keeping track of my credit record for years, groomed it up to an A+ status on my credit report, and have never missed a payment (or been crushed by debt).

When the new Samsung Galaxy S6 I was announced as the latest flagship phone, I knew the time had come. I walked into my nearest Vodacom, applied ... and was approved the next day. From flat-out rejections on a basic contract, to an instant approval on the top of the line phone they had ... it was an amazing 'full circle' moment for me.

I'm not saying that debt is good, and there are definitely some things I wish I hadn't bought on credit, but at the end of the day it's just money you're loaning from yourself in the future (and paying somebody else handsome interest on). Manage it like any finance, and you'll get access to all sorts of nice things (at a price).

For anybody trying to be entirely debt free, not having a credit record is always going to bite you sooner or later, no matter how noble it is.

You must be indebted and pay timeously to get credit rate. Short advice, get Edgars, Jet, CNA card and buy something on credit (I think you get few months interest free) and pay installments fully before deadline. Then 3 months later come back to Vodacom.

If declined request that the the store that is helping you to do a "declined review". If you have no bad listings but dont have a very active credit history either, then Vodacom will request to see the bank statements, payslip etc and make a call on the declined review based on that. It is important that you give them your bank statements that you transact with. They want to see money coming in and money going out. Not some savings account with a static balance.

I asked all of this and when I applied I did hand in salary slip, bank statements and employers contract but still, I have not enough credit (I do have a house on bond but apparently not displayed.....).
Its absolute ridiculous. Debt is Good.......

Did they do a declined review though? PM me your ID number. I want to see if they did.

Shedding tears doesn't help. There is no other way, believe me. Follow above instruction and you will be able to get R12000 phone without any problems. :)
Or chose other network.
