New Covid variant: First case confirmed in Europe with Belgium infection

Belgium has confirmed a case of the new, more transmissible Covid-19 variant, a virologist says.

It’s the first case in Europe of the variant feared to be more resistant to vaccines.

Marc Van Ranst, whose laboratory works closely with Belgium’s public health body Sciensano, said on Twitter that the variant was found in a traveller returning to Belgium from Egypt on 11 November.


The person developed the first symptoms on Monday, the virologist said.

Scientists are analysing two samples to establish whether they are the new coronavirus variant first detected in South Africa, he explained.

The waves started to hit Europe and the UK more than a month ago, now we found the new strain and all of a sudden it’s in the UK, Belgium, Israel, Hong Kong etc.
It was already there, they didn’t know what it was, we found it and identified it. I think it’s time we get recognised for our work and advanced resources.
This “originated” from narrative needs to stop.

I think other country's scientists have a gag order. Ours are just 2 honest or government too inept to understand consequences of being first to media release for sequencing new strains already probably present most other places.

Yes it was found in an EU citizen who travelled to Egypt. The other guy in Israel travelled to Malawi. You can't call it a South African variant. It was just discovered here. Other African countries just don't have the analyzing capabilities to discover variants.

Botswana... A local source confirmed it for me, tho the patient didn't succumb to the virus.

The first European case of the new B.1.1.529 variant has been detected in Belgium, as the UK imposed new restrictions on travel from South Africa and five other nearby countries because of the risk that vaccines may not protect against it.

Just hours after the UK health secretary, Sajid Javid, warned it was highly likely the new variant has spread further than where it was first discovered in South Africa, Belgium recorded a case in a woman who had recently travelled from Egypt via Turkey.

The case was identified in an unvaccinated young adult woman who developed mild flu-like symptoms 11 days after travelling and had no links with South Africa or other countries in southern Africa.

We’ve been attacked and discriminated against by so many countries so quickly & unnecessarily.

I respect the health minister for sticking to transparency during today's Q&A (If our govt really mean that)...

It's pissed me off a bit that countries with local cases are banning travel here.
