New driver’s licence card to be introduced this year
The Department of Transport plans to introduce a new driver’s licence card this year and implement a bouquet of measures to improve the service the public receives when visiting and interacting with driving licence test centres (DLTCs).

Mbalula said the National Department of Transport (NDoT) wants to “kill the queues at DLTCs and is also working on undermining the corruption involved in the booking of DLTC slots, especially in Gauteng.

He said this is to ensure that getting a driver’s licence does not become a cumbersome and stressful journey, and to make it accessible.

Some insurers have stated that even though the government is allowing a grace period on expired licenses, they will not do the same. So might be worthwhile confirming.

*source, someone posted something here a while ago. I'm happy to be proven wrong. Think it was Santam or something.

This country is truly run by inept clowns. So a new type of driver's licence is going to solve all these problems these fuc-kups cannot and have not solved for years? How do these turds even manage to dress themselves everyday?

This reply from my insurance company when asked whether we are still covered if driving with an expired licence:

"We have had lots of queries in this regard
It is important to note; that

1. That has to be a Licence issued needing renewal
2. And proof must be provided that there has been an attempt to renew, and or that it is in progress"

Would love to know the policy of other insurance companies.

My recollection is that you are still a licensed driver just that the card is expired. There's no expiry to your licence and only to the card that serves as proof that you are a licensed driver.

Insurance ombudsman would have a field day with them if they refused a claim because your licence card is expired.

Expired drivers licence card ≠ expired drivers licence

You're correct about the card expiring and not the licence! ..... and you have an excellent point with the ombudsman - thank you :)

True, but if that is the case, why do license cards have an expiry date to begin with? (other than the government trying to make money out of us every 5 years, which is probably a big reason)

Objectively speaking, your eyes get tested every time you renew your license. So one could argue that, if not anything else, you get checked every 5 years if you eyesight is sufficient for safe driving.

Couldn't insurance companies then say that, because your license has expired, it is questionable if your eyesight was sufficient, in the event of a claim?

Yep, they could try that unless you have proof of visiting an optician and getting new glasses I suppose.

3. We need an accurate job description of the license holder.
