New driver's licence cards finally set to debut

Transport minister Sindisiwe Chikunga has revealed that the Department of Transport expects to start printing South Africa's new driving licence cards by the end of April 2024.

While briefing the media on the scrapping of e-tolls in Gauteng, she said her department was finalising the procurement of a new licence card printing machine.

About time, mine expires end of next month

"Following the procurement of the new machine, it will undergo a trial phase to ensure it functions as intended and that the cards produced are of sufficient quality."

And what if the comrades tenda machine is not printing to standard?

I just need to know whether the validity period will change from 5 to 8..need to renew licence in march 2025

It'll break 1 month after so 1 June?
Nah, I reckon it will print 100 licenses, then run out of yellow ink, but they won't be able to just buy yellow ink, they will need to buy a whole new set of inks at a hugely overinflated price. Since all the money had already been looted during the tender process, they won't be able to buy the new ink, and we will be back to using the old machine.

The ANC will point to the 100 printed licenses, deem it a success, and throw themselves a party where they get given new BMWs and drink Johnny Walker Blue with Cream Soda. The rest of SA will continue to struggle with the existing license system.

Mine expired a month ago. I'm waiting for the new cards to save me a double trip to that horrid Licensing Orifice.

I got a fine for driving with an expired license. The guys at Metro Police scrapped it when I mentioned that your drivers license does not expire (As stated on the traffic fine) - the card upon which it is printed only does.

It did take a bit of insisting. Seems that they didn't want to have to make a trip to court.

They agreed in the end to scrap it and gave me my fine back with a stamp and date saying voided.

Mine expires February next year. All I want it appointment booking here in KZN before then. Anything to make the process easier, please

I usually go to the Marianhill licensing office at 7am and wait for them to open at 8am. I was done by 8:30am.

If you go late be prepared to wait 4-6 hours. Oh and make sure you take your docs and own black pen, and a grayscale photo if you want a temp license.

I normally go early but seems I need to go earlier. Last time I went was just before the hard lockdown, so I was lucky. Loadshedding meant I had to wait an additional 2 hours as well.

I went to Winkelspruit then but am considering trying Rossburgh again. While their reputation in the past has been rubbish, they have apparently actually sorted out a lot of their issues. Will decide closer to the time.

I've lost my card so am used to driving without it. Won't be wasting my money on a temp card.

Which fine is the cheapest?

Expired drivers licence card
or
Forgetting drivers licence card at home?

I still have a A1 from school days.
Still remember that Yamaha 50cc with fondness.
What license code do you need for an electric bike ?
Yamaha DT50 rocks
Electric bike licences work similar to current motorbike licences.
Upto a certain Wattage motor you need A1
Over a certain wattage you need A
