Ford Focus RS Edition gains Race Red swansong version

Final run of top-spec super-hatch to be produced in just 300 units for the UK

Ford is producing 300 Race Red examples of the Focus RS Edition as a swansong for the all-wheel-drive super-hatch.

The RS Edition is a higher-spec version of the regular car that gets a Quaife limited-slip differential to more effectively split torque across its front axle.

The diff is a mechanical part and works alongside the rear axle’s GKN Twinster torque vectoring technology – the system that enables the car’s Drift mode.

Ford Performance’s European boss said the part is “for hardcore driving enthusiasts” and adds “additional mechanical grip” to make it “even easier to carry speed through a corner on the track and maximise acceleration on the way out”.

To signal the higher-spec equipment, RS Editions get a black rear wing and black cast alloy wheels. Race Red versions gain a grey finish on their brake calipers, along with the body colour. Race Red was already available in the US and Switzerland, but it comes exclusively on this special variant in Britain.

Performance from the RS Edition’s 2.3-litre Ecoboost four-pot remains unchanged, with 345bhp and 347lb ft enabling the car to accelerate from zero to 62mph in 4.7sec.

Prices for the Race Red RS Edition start at £36,295 – £500 more than RS Editions in other colours. Production is due to run between February and March.

Following this, the next-generation Focus will be revealed. While not confirmed, an RS version of it is expected, due to comments from an inside source that suggest "at least one more" RS is due.

2018 Ford Focus RS Limited Edition review - CarsGuide

One of the comments on the video, made by the reviewer himself: "...Video focused on track performance. Written review called out more day-to-day issues, like a so-so warranty, modest active safety and only four airbags"

:wtf:

Very disappointed in this car. Has the looks and the go, but the price tag along with the well known reliability issues makes it a very NO GO purchase.

Litchfield Ford Focus RS 2018 review

Should I buy one?

Litchfield's engine upgrades (£3264 fitted, VAT included) do a very good job of making the Focus RS faster, but it’s the chassis modifications that are really easy to recommend. The suspension kit costs £2500 and makes the car more comfortable in daily use yet even better at speed over a bumpy road.

NEXT-GEN FORD FOCUS RS TO MAKE 300+ KW, SAYS REPORT…

A fresh report out of the United Kingdom suggests that the next-generation Ford Focus RS will employ a mild-hybrid set-up to boost peak power past 300 kW and allow the hyper hatch to take on the upcoming version of the Mercedes-AMG A45.

According to Autocar, the Blue Oval brand will reveal its new Focus RS in 2020, complete with a 48-volt mild hybrid system expected to boost both power and efficiency.

The report suggests that the upcoming version of the hottest Focus will make in excess of 300 kW and around 575 N.m, putting it squarely in line to compete with the likes of next-generation versions of Mercedes-AMG’s A45 and Audi Sport’s RS3 Sportback.

Autocar adds that the Focus RS will retain the familiar 2,3-litre four-cylinder petrol unit, likely hiked from the current 257 kW to around 275 kW thanks to upgrades to the turbocharger, induction system and more. The 48-volt mild hybrid arrangement will, of course, provide the additional grunt.

In addition, the British publication speculates that the new outputs and added low-down torque will see the claimed zero to 100 km/h sprint time fall from the current 4,7 seconds to somewhere around 4,2 seconds. A dual-clutch transmission (in addition to the expected six-speed manual) could also be on the cards, says Autocar.
