Pricing will be interesting here in SA, the first one was not cheap. They'll have to put a much better engine than the 1.2l to justify the price.

New Honda Brio revealed! Second-gen hatchback grows

The new, second-generation Honda Brio hatchback has been revealed in Indonesia, boasting a fresh design and a larger luggage compartment.

The reveal comes after the unveiling of the Brio Amaze sedan in India in February 2018, and was previewed by the (unimaginatively named) Small RS Concept.

The second-generation hatchback’s wheelbase measures 2 405 mm, which represents a significant 60 mm increase over that of the original. The newcomer measures 3 815 mm long (that’s a full 205 mm more than before), while width is unchanged at 1 680 mm.

The Japanese automaker says the result of the longer wheelbase is “a larger rear seating space” as well as a more generous boot, which grows from a claimed 175 litres to a far more useful 258 litres.

Interestingly, the hatch design of new Brio has changed from a large glass panel to a conventional tailgate that the automaker says opens 15 percent wider than that of the previous model. This, claims Honda, allows “excellent rear visibility” as well as offering “better security”.

From what we can tell, the naturally aspirated 1,2-litre four-cylinder i-VTEC petrol engine is carried over largely unchanged from the outgoing range, although it now offers 66 kW and 110 N.m (the current SA-spec model makes 65 kW and 109 N.m). Mated to a five-speed manual as standard, the Brio will also be offered with a continuously variable transmission (CVT).

Honda reveals 'grown up' second generation Brio

Honda’s second-generation Brio hatchback has made its world debut at the Indonesia International Auto Show, and it appears to have grown up in more ways than one.

For starters it’s somewhat larger, with the five-door hatch having grown by over 200mm in length.

Much of that went into the tail end, where the Brio now gets something resembling a proper boot - with a conventional tailgate replacing the previous glass unit - while luggage capacity has grown by 84 litres to 258 litres.

There’s also more rear legroom, says Honda, with the wheelbase having grown by 60mm.

The 1.2-litre i-Vtec normally aspirated petrol engine carries over with a slight increase in power and torque - at 66kW and 110Nm versus the current car’s 65kW and 109Nm. Customers can choose between a five-speed manual and CVT transmission.

The Brio that eventually comes to South Africa could differ from the Indonesian version you see here in terms of appearance and spec, although the cabin does not look radically different from that in the current model, apart from the inclusion of a 15.4cm touchscreen infotainment system in the range-topping RS model, along with some orange decorative trim and stitching.

The RS also gets sportier exterior styling in the form of a black grille, side skirts, 15-inch alloys, tailgate spoiler and new rear bumper with diffuser and Phoenix Orange Pearl paint.

It gets stiffer suspension too, but nothing more in the way of fireworks beneath the bonnet.

Here’s why the new Honda Brio isn’t coming to South Africa

At the local launch of the new Honda Amaze sedan in October 2018, it emerged that the second-generation Brio hatchback was not on the cards for South Africa. And now we’ve stumbled across some news that seemingly explains why.

According to the ETAuto, the Japanese automaker’s Indian subsidiary has ceased production of the Brio hatchback due to slow sales in that country. Interestingly, though, it reportedly has no plans to start building the new version, which was revealed in Indonesia back in August.

The first-generation model currently offered in South Africa is, of course, imported from India. For the record, the firm’s local arm says it will continue selling the Brio here until stock runs dry, which it earlier estimated to be as late as May 2019.

IndianAutosBlog furthermore reports Honda’s decision to pull the plug on the Brio in India may involve upcoming regulatory changes in that country, which would force the brand to invest in an upgraded body structure as well as add standard safety items such as seatbelt reminders, rear parking sensors, ABS with EBD and a speed-alert warning.

In South Africa, the outgoing Brio hatchback range comprises three derivatives, priced from R164 200 to R194 900 and each powered by a naturally aspirated 1,2-litre four-cylinder petrol engine sending 65 kW and 109 N.m to the front axle.

The new model is currently built only in Karawang, Indonesia.

The Indian subsidiary of the Japanese carmaker Honda Cars India has stopped production of its hatchback Brio, sources close to the development told ETAuto.

The company also reported very low production of Brio in the last two months. It produced 120 units in August and 102 units in September, according to the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers' data.

Sources also confirmed that as of now there no talk on bringing back a new generation of Brio.

An email seeking comment from Honda Cars remained unanswered at the time of writing this story.

First launched in September 2011, Honda Brio has not been very successful in the Indian market. The hatchback got its last update in 2016.

Honda Cars India experienced a declining trend in domestic sales of the Brio, as it sold 183, 157 and 64 units in the months of July, August and September, respectively. The car has been one of the least selling cars in the country.

With this, Honda Cars will exit India’s highest volume segment which has a monthly sales of about 35000 units and Maruti Suzuki Alto has been undisputed leader in the segment for over a decade.

The carmaker posted a flat growth at 14,233 units in October 2018, when compared to 14234 units in the same month last year. HCIL exported a total of 440 units in October 2018.

It has registered a cumulative growth of 3% selling 108,652 units during April- October period in 2018, against 105,503 units in the corresponding period of April - October in 2017.

Honda discontinues Brio; Amaze the new entry-level car

According to a media report, Honda has discontinued the Brio hatchback in India. The company has said that the production of the Brio has been stopped and currently, there are no plans to launch the next generation Brio in India.

According to a statement by Rajesh Goel, Senior VP and Director (sales and Marketing), Honda will no longer make the hatchback and Amaze will be the new entry-level car from the Japanese carmaker in India.

It is also reported that customer preference is shifting towards bigger cars.

The Honda Brio made its debut in the Indian market in 2011. In 2016, Honda introduced the Brio facelift, which came with an updated exterior and an all-black dashboard replete with a 2-DIN audio system.

However, despite the update, sales have been on the decline. According to the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), Honda sold just 64 units of the Brio in September 2018.

Since launch, the company has sold 97,000 units of the small car in India.

In India, the Brio was offered with a 1.2-litre, 4-cylinder petrol engine that produced 87 BHP @ 6,000 rpm and 109 Nm of peak torque @ 4,500 rpm.

The engine was mated to a 5-speed manual and a 5-speed automatic transmission.

Based on my experiences with the New Generation Honda Ballade and Honda's after Sales Service...... I would not touch another Honda with a 10 foot pole. Owned many other brands, had the worst experience with Honda.
