Enjoy, first thing to do once its running > download updated software
Dude, the stock software is slow as a dinosaur...that's definitely the first thing I'm gonna do. :D

But I still gotta decide what type of setup I'm gonna go with. I only have a single HDTV in the house. Quad LNB? Dual LNB + Multiswitch? SATCR?

I would go for a dual LNB + multiswitch, it allows for future expansion. Get either a 2x6 or 2x8 multiswitch, the spare ports can always come in handy later on

I'm wishing I had got a 2x8 instead of a 2x6 cos I now need a couple extra :(

Sorry to derail the thread but what's the approximate cost of a dual LNB + 2x8 switch and installation?

They are around R250 to R300 each (Try a SpaceTV or SatsRus i think you have up there), installations vary a lot but look around. If you are happy to do roof climbing & connect it all up yourself then you could buy the equipment yourself & just get someone to get the dish & LNB up & align it

I don't trust their HD marketing anymore after this fiasco.

The Discovery HD showcase will be watered down too. European Discovery HD = 35mbps. SA HD channel currently broadcast at < 1/3 of that.

Who said anything about a mpeg 4 stream? Neither DSTV nor Discovery HD are using mpeg 4.

Though you are right in that they are not currently broadcasting at 35mbps, that was 6 months ago. Currently at 20mbps. No idea why it was originally that high.

DStv use AVC which is a MPEG-4 based codec.

Apart from a few early Blu-Ray discs, I have no idea who would use MPEG-2 as a transport for HD. It can be done, but as previous posters have pointed out you can double the data rate needed compared to a MPEG-4 based codec.

I do not know which European Discovery HD feed you are referring to, but on Sky UK, Discovery HD it is 12.83mbps feed with a MPEG-4 AVC codec.

Yeah - oops got my aspect ratio wrong

But is this 720p?

Anyone notice the transponder clock on SSHD is about 45 mins fast?

Yeah, dstv is broadcasting in either 720p or 1080i...

I think for sports they broadcast in 720p

With new pay tv players due end march 2010 , I'm gonna wait before I invest in any HD Decoders/installations. Surely the competition should be able to offer us more than 3 HD channels?

Would be nice if they got the schedule up on their site when they launched the channel though
