Wireless Business Solutions (WBS) today launched i-Go lite, a wireless broadband package offering users 210 megabytes of data at just R195 (incl. VAT) per month.
“i-Go lite is South Africa’s most affordable broadband offering and with speeds of up to one megabit per second it’s also the country’s fastest mobile broadband,” said Thami Mtshali, CEO of WBS.

Black-owned WBS’s wireless broadband network uses iBurst technology enabling very reliable high-speed mobile Internet access for both laptops and desktop computers.
According to Mr Mtshali, “South Africa needs a massive uptake of broadband by individual users to put the country firmly on the road to 6% GDP growth. Our economy is suffering because we have a paltry 100 000 broadband users out of a population of 45 million people.
WBS expects the new i-Go lite package to help the company fulfill its mandate of making quality mobile broadband accessible in South Africa’s underserviced areas. WBS has offered wireless broadband in Soweto, Alexandra and in townships in Pretoria East since 2004.

“Opportunity lies where no one has gone before. It boggles the mind that the three million people who live in Soweto still have no access to fixed line broadband 11 years into the democracy that was supposed to give everyone a voice,” concluded Mr Mtshali.

Should i-Go lite customers exceed their monthly quota of 210 megabytes of data usage additional capacity can be purchased at R139 (VAT incl.) for 500 megabytes or R229 (VAT incl.) for one gigabyte. WBS levies a R114 activation charge on all new month to month subscriptions. This package is not available on a 24 month contract.

WBS is offering a discounted price of R2 500 (VAT incl.) for a desktop modem until the end of March 2006. The price for a laptop modem is R2 100 (VAT incl.).

What a rip off! I buy a GB at R75 for ADSL, its NOT AFFORDABLE by ANY standards. WBS you siffies! who would have thought that they could get worse? Instead of been part of the cause of Digital Apartied, why dont you rather be part of the solution?

Shooo, ok not just for contract. Those "sign your rights all away" legal documents worry me

The point of these packages arent to buy gigabytes of data at all! They are intended for people who want to do some light surfing and e-mail and maby a few sofware downloads from any location at a cheap price. It pretty much fulfills this criteria, and whould be a much better option to ADSL if around 200-500 MB is all you needed.
No need to be so critical and look at everything from a "power-user" point of view, which most of us are by South African standards, and no those standards arent set by Telkom's cap but really by the low average internet usage in SA.

Hi.

I think the idea is to get people online. 210MB for a user that checks his email twice a day is good value. Look at how much his comparative Telkom costs are!

The minimum telkom charge is: R270pm for the 192k line and lets say 1GB for R95. Even if they GAVE you the 1 GB, iBurst is still a cheaper product.

Who DOESN'T think this is a good entry level product? At least people can get online. For a dialup you will pay say R80pm for the account plus phone line (R100) plus call costs (R100), lets say R200 total to err on the side of caution. And all this for a measly 56k!

I think it is good to have your 'starter' packages that are affordable. Lets not kid around, Telkom still has a firm grip on international bandwidth pricing so everyone that thinks they are getting ripped off by Sentech/IS/WBS/anyone else is MAD. Get realistic, Telkom still controls the input costs for all these 'competitiors'

All prices are inflated because of Telkoms artificially high prices!

Pesonally if I where only 2 check email and light browsing I would use gprs or edge data bundles , would be the cheapest by far.

No modem
Good coverage in SA ( beter than iburst )

Agreed!

The below stated connectivity bares no merit because of the ludacris price for the device, I mean who can just shell out R2800.00 and not afford ADSL...

I don't know how expensive the 3G data cards are, but it's surely more useful than that deal with far more coverage. You can get 3G bundled 250MB for R200.00 or 500MB for R350.00

What a load of BS.

Jazzed is right. You don't even need a 3g data card, you can get yourself a 3G bluetooth phone free on contract and use that as a 385kbps modem, whixh is better than average WBS speed anyway!
Data is R100/100Mb or R500/Gb so it's much of a muchness.

Just look at the business model from a reseller angle. Who in their right mind is going to supply UTDs at cost price after doing a signal test and demo and then pick up round about R10 per month commission?

How do resellers get per customer?

Ok, umm.... how does that influence the clients decision... gprs / edge / g3, is still a better option for them.

Our point is that the product offering as a whole is unattractive. I think with somewhat increased bandwidth at the same pricing it would be viable, but otherwise almost every informed purchaser will go for a mobile offering.
