New ID numbers for South Africa - The big changes

The Department of Home Affairs (DHA) published its Draft Official Identity Management Policy on 22 December 2020, which aims to introduce a new ID system in South Africa. Many activists are now calling for a random ID number without any personal information contained in it.

The DHA said the new ID system is needed as the current Identification Act is over 20 years old and do not align with constitutional principles of equality, non-discrimination, and human dignity.

The new system also wants to incorporate key local and global developments in managing official personal information.

Oh god, here we go again.... long queues at Home Affairs. New ID cards. Rxxx.xx fees..... there is just no end to this absurdity.
You can now be transgender according to the article

Many activist groups oppose the plan to introduce a third gender group, in addition to male or female, as it may add to the stigma associated with non-binary people.
"The next four digits are used to define your gender"
Female: 0000 - 4999
Male: 5000 - 9999

Sjoe, seems there is already a lot of subgroups to choose from already!

Random ID ? Lol how about you get to chose your child's ID number? that seems fair ?

What about the shear impracticality of changing every ID number associated with every property title dead, vehicle, bank account, contract, passport, id card, divorce orders, court orders, criminal records, etc, etc in the country? ID numbers are now so tightly associated with almost every admin function in South African day-to-day life that changing them is going to be the biggest headache and nightmare ever.

They will most likely link the old ID number (for internal purposes only) to the new one and offer SAPS and credit bureaus access to link criminal records and credit profiles. But, you are right it will be a nightmare for banks, title deeds, etc.
