My first and , second lenghty post did not take, so I'll try short version:

New ADSL installation
Own Modem SMC7003USB v.2 - USB
Windows XP Pro

Telkom techies connected their own modem to line, and declared it working (not through PC/Laptop)

I then installed SMC modem as per instructions

Created new broadband connections, with settings as per previous posts in this forum, PPPOE, security etc seems OK.

Error:
First it says Connecting through WAN Miniport (PPPOE), then error
opening port...Error 678 The remote computer did not respond.

Migth my brand new modem be wrong?

Any help will be HUGELY appreciated

I know this is daft:

But have you checked your username and password for the zillionth time?

For reasons defying logic, it often seems to help getting a significant other to retype usernames and passwords.[:D]

Kaspaas, thanks, I have tried the username several times. i'm asuming I would at least get a incorrect username/password respond, and not "remote computer did not respond", or am I wrong?

have you used the Telkom software to test if you can login as guest? If this is successful then there is another problem...

The device they use to test the line simulates a PC connecting to the network.

Use the software they have provided to check for the guest login as antowan suggested.

If that doesn't work, call the Telkom techies back and don't let them give you any tripe about not using their modem. When I had my line installed, the techie insisted that I connect my D-Link DSL300G, and proceded to phone somebody at a testing center.

The techie refused to leave before getting a call from the testing center indicating that the DSLAM is seeing the modem and that they do synch. Your techie should have performed this test for you too.

Have you checked that your VPI/VCI are correct? Should be 8/35
I am using the same modem with no problems (while I wait for my SMC7804WBRA to arrive).

Hi guys,
Thanx very much for the reply and the effort.

My SMC modem it seems is not ADSL compatible, but actually an alien device sent through time/space to earth to wipe all intelligent life of the face of the earth (one person at a time, starting with me). I however lay no claim to being intelligent, and just survived it's wreath.

I returned the alien spawn to my supplier, and asked for a swop out - lo and behold, it "just" happened to be the last one they have (seem to ever have had, since they could not come up with one other persons name whom have bought a similar model (I thought I'd be clever and speak to somebodyelse whom have had bought such a device))sold. (Can anyone fololow that sentence?)

Anyway, it seems these models HAS been sold in this country, and IS being used successfully by at least one other very helpful forum member(thanx Unimatrix69!), but nobody else. Which again was a strange error on the side of the aliens. Me, I would have used a device which is seemingly used by more ADSL users, i.e a Netgear product.

I digress(?), anybody now where to get a (cheap) USB ADSL modem in Pretoria? (Must have a proven track record of NOT being green and slimey)

Die you Alien scum, hahaha!!!
