Hopefully it will not be long before local broadband activists redirect their efforts more profitably towards government and push the authorities to get real about this issue, and acknowledge that the lack of technology and related lack of competition is damaging the economy, affecting the development of services, and threatening our future.

Time to act!

Heh ... I wrote that article a few weeks ago:
http://www.myadsl.co.za/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=3690

There are two problems here:
(a) Temporary problem: Sentech not delivering the service they advertised. This is not "sniping at Sentech" ... its Sentech commiting fraud.(Telkom deliver what they advertise ... albiet at an extortionate price.)
(b) Fundamental problem: Lack of real telecoms competiton due to misguided ZA government policy. (Duopoly isnt real competiton) Real competition is the ONLY thing that will bring affordable data telecoms to everyone in this country. This has been proven again and again. You cannot legislate cheap, effective data telecoms into existance ... sorry.

Duopoly is meaningless when both are controled by the same shareholder bent on maximising profits at the expense of the people. Why are our legisilators totally unable to see what they are doing? It's a clasic case of killing the goose that lays the glden egg. Screw the long term picture, we want more money now. Got luxury presidential jets and fact finding missions to Cannes to pay for. Lord knows, they arn't spending it on fighting aids or crime! This is so frustrating. Going from being a country with one of the highest internet growth rates in the world a couple of years ago to being in the technological stone age now merely because of restrictive laws aimed at making big profits for a few while screwing the local economy.

Bahhh!

Just watch in five years time when our government is screaming about the digital divide and how unfair it is that we are so far behind in technology.
