Whistle that is definitely a killer price, I'd much rather go with a big international company that I know for a fact will supply me with quality support. I'm not insulting anyone working at Mustek, but at this point, if I'm going to blow this use amount of money on a laptop, I'll rather go with Quality above quantity.

Well, support from Mustek for my W370ST has been non-existant. But that is probably because the laptop is performing FAULTLESSLY since getting it. And it is being worked hard every single day of its life. Playing graphics intensive games all day long (at least 8 hours of game play per day).

I have first hand experience with ASUS and HP support and it sucks donkey's balls.

The issue is, what if something goes wrong? Will Mustek help, or not? The other concern is the warrantee. Why not give a 3 year warrantee? Only expecting it to last two years, are they? I'm not against Mecer at all, I just have a bad feeling about their after sales service. Yes, it local (which is a good thing). At that price, it should be a no brainer, but it isn't unfortunately.

I always do. I stick to Dell and make sure it has balance of NBD left. Sorted.
Most of them have around 2 years left.
Currently I have an XPS 15 I paid R8k for (retail R25k) and an XPS 13 I paid R3.5k for (retail R23k). Can't beat that. And they both got NBD until 2015 still.

Care to share where you got those 2nd had deals from?

More info needed on Mecer laptop...seems to be a dark horse

That Mecer laptop specs seem perfect for the price!

Could you please post some reviews and benchmarks? That laptop does look very dull from the pics I saw, but if the build quality is not too bad it could win favour against competitors. Which reputable SA online shop sells these Mecer laptops?

After some googling it turns out from a post at carbonite forums that besides a dull look this laptop has no backlit keyboard to improve it's looks.

What rock have you been sleeping under? No offence.

Customer service is a lucky packet anywhere in this country. You may just find that customer service from these so called name brands is atrocious at best.

Did you manage to buy your laptop yet? Just checking to ensure your post does not fade away into meaningless banter from other posters and trying to stay on topic. The poster who recommended that Mecer laptop should do us a favour by posting some of their experiences with that laptop as it really does seem to have huge potential for my future laptop purchase.

If you want to do some more research:
Mecer is a dumbed down(less optioned) Clevo.
Mecer is the local option.
Branded as Sager in the US.
Branded as Horize in Aus.

Some of the other model's have MXM GPU that you can switch out for a gen or 2.
If your looking for bling they don't cover that base.
I have a Horize P150EM,had it for 2yrs & no complaints - has served well with no problems - would buy Clevo again.
Like you dug up the local model may have no backlit keyboard & usually they are behind on screen options as well...that "w" series is fixed GPU also not MXM but i guess that keeps the price down.

"Gaming Laptop" should be equal to "Bling"

It really is sad about the missing "bling" part since I also want to possibly have some "bragging" rights with my future laptop purchase. The screen of this mecer laptop seem to be glossy as well, with very poor performance in direct sunlight. :crying:

Some link to more info on the mecer laptop: http://www.nag.co.za/forums/archive/index.php/t-19648.html

All of the internal components however seems to really be the main plus points for this laptop, however it's all being let down by a VERY DULL exterior unfortunately. Will take a skip on this one then. :erm:

Edited:
You would not find a more powerful graphics card than Nvidia GTX 765M in any notebook for under R15,000 period. (hoping someone can prove me wrong, btw) - Look at reviews on GPUBoss.

It would seem that you can find a more powerful graphics card for a laptop under R15,000 in the MSI GX60 3AE Hitman Edition on Wootware . The GPU is not an Nvidia but the AMD Radeon HD-8970M. :)

The review of the AMD Radeon HD-8970M on GPUBoss is available here:

Ok, let me bump this.

So I've been busy dealing with Pinnacle the past few days, without any success. They are selling the Lenovo Y510P at R11 000.00. the specs of that laptop didn't look too bad. So Thursday IO decided I had enough, and started to look elsewhere.

I came across the following laptop today:

http://www.comx.co.za/Buy-Notebooks-Laptops-Q2756F-4700MQ-1TB-Gigabyte-Q2756F-lp-88751.php

Looks like it is actually a good option. Above average GPU(GT750M). Great CPU(i7-4700MQ), 16GB RAM maximum, and from the looks of it, it can take 2 HDD's, and a M-SATA SSD. Best of all it had a Full HD 17.3" LCD monitor, which is another bonus. Now to find a few reviews.

That laptop does not look so bad at all except for the glossy screen and the graphics card. Just an update also to this thread that I have now managed to purchase the following laptop and it's working and looking like a dream (comes with a sub-woofer): :)

Awesome. Also looked at an Asus a while ago. Where did you buy from? A retailer, or distributor? Also, is it a full HD the screen? How many HDD's can it take? How is the battery life, and how many ram slots does it have?

Good day,

I'm in need of a new Laptop. ol' faithful is starting to show it's age now. The i3 can't keep up anymore.

Ideally I want the following:

Quad core i7 processor
SSD + 1TB mechanical HDD - I'm more than willing to buy and put the SSD in myself (I don't like hybrid hard drives, so don't even suggest it)
16GB RAM
17.3" 1080P display
Dedicated GPU (GT640M or the ATI alternative)

Is there anything out there that will be worth while?

That's DEFINITELY a great machine !

Just unsure if you can get it for under R 15 000 ...

Maybe you will have to try a lower size hard-drive (about 500GB).
Graphics Card : 1-2MB is fine

I suppose you're going to be using

Adobe Photoshop CS6
Coreldraw CS 6

...

No, I'm not going to do a lot of PhotoShop stuff. I'm not a graphic designer. I do a lot of programming (Read Visual Studio, and Eclipse). I do a bit of gaming (If I want to go over board, I'll play on my Rig). If my Laptop can't do it, I'll fall back to my little Gaming rig.

For less than R15K (Retail anyway): http://www.comx.co.za/Buy-Notebooks-Laptops-Q2756F-4700MQ-1TB-Gigabyte-Q2756F-lp-88751.php
I can get an Acer with the specs I'm looking for from Esquire at just over R15 000.

I'm not willing to drop my spec's at all. A 1TB HDD and a 128GB SSD is a bare minimum for me. Also, you don't get 1mb or 2mb graphics cards.
