Rugby body unveils new-look Super 14

JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA May 20 2009 07:28

The Super 14 organisers unveiled a new format on Tuesday designed to perk up a southern hemisphere championship hit by dwindling interest.

Plans include having an extra team from 2011 in the annual competition between Australian, New Zealand and South African provincial franchises and putting more emphasis on fixtures between domestic rivals.

The current February-to-May season will extend to August with a three-week break during June for Test fixtures involving the Wallabies, All Blacks and Springboks.

But the most radical change comes in the format with the present system of each team playing the other 13 in a one-round mini-league and the top four entering the knockout phase ditched.

Mmm I kind of like it.

Its a bit like the soccer in Euro where the top teams from one country play the other top teams with the 3 highest scoring teas to not top the log also get a chance.

Its just a bit long

Fk them, this is killing the Currie Cup.

We'll see how they fill the stadiums for their Super 15 games ;)

I just read that this effectively kills the Currie Cup ........ so in the end, SARU lost their balls and caved to that <insert expletive here> Aussie git .... typical

You are but one of thousands who will not go to the stadiums coming 2011. We'll force their hand if need be. The Currie Cup > What ever Super games.

There was already a big support base saying they will not attend any Super14 games if it was in the Currie Cup season. Which is only going to get even worse now ;)

Why not look at it as extending the currie cup and then the Vodacom cup basically takes over from the CC?

Look the players are going to go where the clubs tell them and the clubs are going to go where the money is.... sad but true.

huh ?

Are you serious ? Pls tell me your not. I would rather watch Brand new low paid players in the CC then watch a high paid Rugby Circus like the Super 15.

This season has just gone on to show how retarded this Super14 idea is. It's getting way too big. The players is killing themselves. That and the fact that everything goes NZ and Aus's way. Check the rulings, the bans everything. SA is being make out to be a joke by all of this. The Super 12 was fine. The Super 14 is too big and now they make it the Super 15 ?

Also they change the points system to be the same as Soccer. Look at ManU they are already champions so the last 2 games is nothing but a waste of time.

I don't like it.

SA should pull out of the Super 14/15 and then make a Provicial series with South America. With the likes of Argentina and a few other countries ;)

Fk NZ and Aus we don't need them.

If i am not mistaken the points system is only valid till the top 6 are decided.

Also if we still stuff NZ and Aus although we get screwed we just show again we are awesome!

I will not judge this till I have atleast seen one season played like this.

We the SA support base must just make our voice clear on this topic. All Super home games we leave the stadium empty. Then fill the stadiums for the CC games. We'll see how the broadcasters like thme apples ;)

Fk it, I will not let the Currie Cup become another Vodacom cup not while I'm alive. We need to start a group in support of the Currie Cup. We need to force the hand of SARFU. They need to grow some balls and stop backing down for the Ausies.

Anyone know where this will take place?

The Sanzar partners will present the proposed structure to the rights-holding News Corporation by the end of June. Any new deal only comes into force from the 2011 season.

I think we need to get a rally going and let them know how we feel :)

Tri-Nations will always kick-off in South Africa in mid-August and conclude with two of the three trans-Tasman matches in early October to allow for early release of Springboks to Currie Cup. The will allow for Tri Nations tests between particular teams in particular countries to become permanent fixtures on the rugby calendar.

You are aware at what time the Currie Cup starts right ? You also know when it ends I assume.

Now if you do the maths that should leave the Key players with about 3 weeks worth of Currie Cup matches not so ?

No matter how you look at it, it is taking players and gametime away from the Currie Cup. The back bone of SA Rugby.

Yes.

Which is just as sad. As noted above the Super 12 was perfect. They are slowly eating away at the Currie Cup. Unless we make a stand it will not be there in a few years.

Well the S14 will become the "backbone". Look its gonna happen like it or not.

This is the proffesional era.

True, but only proffesional if they are getting money from it. If we can stand together and be a force to recon with we can change that. I say put more money into the Currie Cup. Fk we don't Aus or NZ to be 100% honest.

There is more than enough companies that will be willing to carry the CC into new hights. Look at what Vodacom did to the Cheetas and the Bulls. They are well off now. We need more of those kind of sponsors in the Currie Cup and we'll see great things. Unless Supersport is selling advert space for the Super 14 games they will not by the matches to broadcast and so forth.

Grab them where it hurst ;)

I agree with every post you made Pitbull, The CC is sacred.

I for one will/going to be very upset if this is for definite.

No jokes, but a Sharks (i mean Natal) CC victory means more to me than a S14 victory, due to the history of the Currie Cup.

It will be very sad if the CC loses its well earned Status.
