Apple announced a new MacBook today. It's fan-less, has a new keyboard and trackpad design. Weighs less than a kg, and is just 1.3cm thick. Here's what we learnt about it today.

More info: http://iphoneza.co.za/apple-announce-new-macbook-available-gold/

Hey peeps! Did a write up on the new Macbook which was announced today. Please have a read if you like and give me your thoughts in the comments section.

Thanks :)

correct me if i'm wrong, to use the usb - c port when connected to power source, you will have to remove the power plug and then connect the usb c-port jump drive (when they eventually become available).
If thats the case - that sounds like two steps backwards.

Before i LOL even harder i'll just put this out there:
It is a thing of beauty, looks amazing and i bet it will perform amazingly (for the basic requirements its meant for). Stunning piece of technology. BUT;

"The USB-C port in the new MacBook supports USB, DisplayPort, Power, HDMI and VGA, from one port alone. Neat! You will however require adaptors to utilise these missing ports."

Wheres the ethernet port? Why can't i plug my mouse AND keyboard in at the same time? Why can't i plug my mouse and charger in at the same time ? Oh ya, causze using a trackpad is better, i forgot. All i want to do is transfer music onto my Flash drive and my battery is almost dead, ah well sucks for you.

Ahahahahha thats brilliant. Spend R15k on a laptop and then another R5k to use an extra screen and a usb stick. hahahaha. Apple are flippen clever.

Under R1k… and that's only if you use the Apple branded dongle. USB-C is an open standard.

My apologies, i thought it was a seperate adapter for each individual item, i.e 1 adapater for hdmi, 1 adapter for charger etc.

My bad. It still only1 supplies 1 usb port though :/ buy another adapter to fit it that usb port to have more usb ports?

Instead of buying all the addons to get basic functionality, you can get the macbook pro for less money.

I doubt it will be long before manufacturers are coming out with all sorts of adapters including multiple USB, ethernet, etc. The likely scenario for multiple USB devices is a desktop environment so any USB hub should suffice.

Absolutely nothing wrong with the MBP if you're happy carrying around the extra weight.

For someone like my mother, who carries her MBA in her handbag, I can also see the appeal of the new MacBook with it's retina display.

Exactly! I think what people need to realize is that the plain "MacBook" was always the entry level of the range. As such it will have more "stripped" down options, processing power, etc. I'm sure we'll see the new features like USB-c, butterfly keyboard mechanism etc feature in the new airs and pro ranges soon when the time is right and Apple have reached their sales targets for the new MacBook :p
And those upper range models will likely have multiple usb-c ports for example, and we know they will be more of a power house with processing power, memory etc.

Oh and I hope they'll keep the illuminated Apple on those, unlike this new MacBook

I think I'll go with the 13" inch Air, was hoping the macbook would be more functional.

How does one go about getting one with 8 gigs of ram in SA?

It's a crapper screen...so I would have the adapters any day.

I would still stick with the Pro. This new model is not meant to replace the Pro.

Hot dang – just saw some vids over at MacRumors of this in the flesh, so to speak – this thing is THIN!

I will probably end up going with a MBP in any event, at next upgrade (mostly due to my needing to plug into 'old-school' monitors either via VGA or DVI... but that being said, I'm seriously liking the look of this new one.

The adapter is less likely to be an actual issue (then) as opposed to a perceived issue (now), imo. The 8/512 model would probably be ample for my needs – and with that battery life... very tempting.

Its exactly what people asked for, a bigger "iPad" with functionality of a laptop such as usb sticks, presentation etc!

This mac is not for everyone, (not me, I like my MBPr), but its VERY cool!

On the question on where to get a Mac with 8gB or RAM (air) you can order one. We have sold a few special builds in the past year on Apple Devices
