New MacBook Air - South African pricing revealed

R21499 to R24999.

You know what is amazing? That is similar in price to an iPhone.

That is some eye-wateringly poor value for money.

The 256 GB is a couple of thousand cheaper than the equivalently specified XPS 13. Main difference is that the Air is a bit faster on single core operations while the XPS is faster on multiple cores. Overall this price makes sense. The 128 GB makes less sense.

The 256GB XPS 13 with 8550U processor is R18k at Laptops at Cost, R7k cheaper than the MacBook Air in this article.

Pity they discontinued the 11".

Agree the Pro is better value for most - hardly any reason to pick over the 13".

Its a bit of a mistake to compare like for like hardware in this case - well unless you want to install Windows on the Mac or Linux on the Dell.

MacOS / Linux does not need the same power or memory to perform as Windows does to give the same experience IMHO. Can't speak for all use cases but for development that is definitely true.

As for MacOs vs Linux its very much which ones niggles you prefer to put up with...

That XPS has a lower screen resolution than the Air, which is a major cost driver for laptops. It also has only a 10 month balance left on the warranty, which also has an impact on price. With that said the Dell 3 year business warranty is superior to what one gets from Apple (which would probably push me to buying a Dell rather than an Apple).

The offer at Laptops at Cost is very good, but a more comparable deal would be: https://www.wootware.co.za/dell-936...pci-e-ssd-windows-10-pro-64-bit-notebook.html
