VOIP (protocol) is Voice over the IP protocol ie. Skype. Mixit an IM is simple text and should not use VOIP and therefore not be charged at R25/MB.

I said that a while ago too.

but then again. IF the powers that be want to stop Voip from competing with normal cell operations then the same logic can apply with MXit and IM competing for SMS traffic.

Guys

Please note the only approved tariff was for VOIP

There is no differential charging for Mixit and P2P at this stage and if we do start charging R25 per meg for VOIP we'll only do it if VC and the other providers do so as well otherwise I don't see it happening

Is this a different tune? Will the implementation of VOIP rates be a prisoner's dilema for MTN, i.e. if you implement VOIP you put yourself at a disadvantage wrt the others, who then gains a competitive advantage. The similar applies to them. However, if you both implement it, you would both be better off than you are currently. However, you cannot do that as it is against competition policy. Why dont MTN simply develop better data packages suited to the changing broadband environment and scrap the VOIP rate altogher. That way you give yourself a better competitive edge over VC, CellC and VM.

Just my thoughts.

Thanks Data Dude

MTN does not currently bill any IP traffic at differential rates i.e. all IP traffic is billed at the same rate in and out of bundle.
MTN does not currently block any type of IP traffic.
MTN has a rate of R25/MB lodged with ICASA for VoIP traffic. MTN reserves thew right to charge this tariff but does not currently do so.

Hope this clarifies everything.

Use your own handle in vain...

Quite interesting to see how fingers are pointed... as I didn't post, or reply on any of these threads, until now...

If by "You have requested I show some proof" you are refering to me,

nope that wasn't me that was CCABW

It does seem that you are trying your best to get MTN_DD to respond to your opinions.

As far as I understand things it is not the' regulator' (whoever you think that is) who is opposed to Voip on the MTN networks but MTN themselves as it competes against their normal cell operations.

that being so , it might be probable that IM apps like Mxit might get penalized in the future as they are competing for the income generated by SMS's.

I certainly hope that this would not be the case.
