Unfortunately I can't see anything getting better till we have another operator that sells the last mile bandwidth like Telkom(not even Sentech have that) Till that happens ADSL will be under the foot of Telkom and so will the Bandwidth prices for international sites...*sighs* it's a bleek future... but it sounds like the SNO MIGHT come into play in August... well here is for hoping.. till then.. well I am not going to hold my breath for a well priced ADSL.

Got ADSL from day one.. I remember those days well. Distant memory. Unfortunately I'm one of those "niche" users heavily dependent on a 24 x 7 low-latency international connection. You are quite right - that's what ADSL initially offered in the first few months of it's lifetime. Telkom's argument will be that this experience was part of the commercial trial, and that they always had the right to "refine" the product to make it sustainable. BS, I know.

Hi,

Can someone that's actually running this "unshaped solution" please post the IP that they assigned to you here. I'd like to see which net block and router(s) they use for that traffic.

Thanks

I'd be surprised if anyone is currently on the unshaped solution. Just got off the phone with the helpdesk again (6pm), and was told that usernames would only be available tomorrow... they hope!

I'm pretty sure othere ISP's don't offer this

That's ANTI-COMPETITIVE to anyone at Telkom who's listening. Basis for complaint my good rednecks from $BC.

one day we are all gonna look back on the "dark-days" of internet in this country. ppl are getting involved now and with the amount of IT professionals in this country sub par internet will have to disappear sooner or later. i just hope that day comes soon.

don't stop fighting the good fight!

Any other early adopters out there or have you all switched to Sentech?

I have both DSL, and a 128k Sentech connection. Sentech started off great, in February. Now, however the service has degraded to below 14.4Kbps modem levels.

Don't even consider Sentech.

Just got contacted to say that the upgrade is complete. Have been allocated a new username and password for the unshaped network - will test later today and feedback.
Syba,

You must really wan't this badly (I am guessing for your online racing), but to the average joe (much like me), this service is appalling. It is WAY overpriced and will put it out of reach of most users, even if it turns out to be everything they promise.

I was really hoping for a slightly more expensive sollution, not a 300+ % increase to get ADSL like it started out as.

Mmm - not sure that I can afford it either. I do take my racing seriously though - currently 5th in a big European league (http://brsc.racesimcentral.com//) despite being disconnected completely from 2 races, and losing 10 or 20 laps in 2 others due to dropped connections. Anyway, between the wife and I we cover an ISDN line and ISP account on top of ADSL. Fortunately we are partly subsidised by her work, but if this works out we'll drop the ISDN completely. This is a one month trial - if it doesn't work out it's back to plan A, well actually plan B. Plan A was normal ADSL :(, until they decided to shape the bloody network.

They could definitely offer a more affordable solution. Just got off the phone with the engineer trying to convert my mailbox, and according to him I'm the only upgrade so far. So, it doesn't sound like there's a ready market queueing up for this. I agree that it's inaccessible in it's current form save for the very stupid, the very wealthy or the hopelessly addicted.

Well rushed home during my luch-hour to try my new uber, unshaped ADSL account. Connection worked perfectly first time. Pinged one of my european game servers - got results in the 1000ms+ range! Disconnected, tried an old shaped account - same results. Checked the i.p. ranges of the two connections - shaped vs unshaped - and they were virtually identical along the lines of 165.165.200.xxx. Logged a fault with the call centre - spent about 20 mins with them on the phone, resetting modem, checking new username etc. They think I should be going onto a completely new IP range, with much better latency. For now they've escalated, and promised to call me back. Back at work so can't do any more testing till tonight - but from the little I saw - at least in terms of international latency - there was absolutely no difference between my shaped and unshaped account. Hopefully it's just a technical error, or related to SAT-3 still being unavailable for international traffic. I was expecting much better results: if this is the way it's gonna be and if there's no noticeable improvement by tomorrow, I'm cancelling the upgrade.

I think for R880 they should at least give you a static IP. That will bridge the costs, and make seem more worthwhile
