first time I've heard of a network upgrade - didn't they upgraded their network a while ago?

Operators tend to upgrade their networks on a continual basis. The time required to deploy the equipment means it needs to happen throughout the year.

They also finance it by medium/long term borrowing usually in USD.

If their loan repayments are in USD and their revenues in rands, they have to adjust it somewhere when the rand depreciates.

500MB for R99 prepaid data valid for how long?
1 day probably?
Isn't voucher expiry illegal according to CPA?
Where's CPA & ICASA when you need need them?

Telkom will give you 1GB for R99 or 2GB for R139, and it only expires at the end of the next calendar month, and it can roam on MTN at up to HSDPA+ if there is no Telkom signal and you enable roaming on your device.
