New SAA will resume flights in September

State-owned airline company South African Airways (SAA) has announced it will resume flights on 23 September 2021.

"The wait is finally over. In just under a month, the striking and familiar livery of SAA will once again be visible in the skies as the airline resumes operations," the company said in a statement on Twitter.

SAA will operate flights from Johannesburg to Cape Town, Accra, Kinshasa, Harare, Lusaka, and Maputo in the initial phase of its relaunch.

Where will they get the customers.
Mango burnt everyone so there will be few takers willing to take a chance and fly SAA.

Will never fly this carrier ever again.

Thing is they pretending to throw randelas at SAA while actually aiming at their own back pockets, African gauvamints are just naturally built that squint when it comes to gauverning.

Gov just want to keep SAA alive to offer free government employee flights. No wonder SAA keep running into debt. Something tells me the 50k+ government officials getting free flights with SAA don't ever pony up funds to SAA so SAA might have 50k+ customers but getting fokol payment from them.

I really, really hope those planes have been fully maintained and serviced during the lengthy period of not flying, and someone has gone over them with a fine tooth comb before the first flights. Planes are meant to be flown not sit around in storage for months on end.

In addition, I hope the pilots had a few good simulator sessions too so they aren't rusty.

Simple. I will not take that chance. I'll rather use kulula, BAA or some other airliner instead.

Unfortunately, there will always be a desperate customer base who need to fly to those African destinations.

JHB to CPT though - there is NO excuse to support this airline.

What is the demand like to those destinations? Seems like there might be an initial take up due to pent up demand but what would be the ongoing sustainability and profitability of those routes? Or are these regional African route choices simply because they've lost their European and US slots?
