New sticky?

I would really like to see a new sticky added to the board.
Called something like "Current Status", it can contain only one post, be locked and only be editable by the admins.

As the situation changes the post can be updated to contain the latest information on the Sentech Saga. Sort of what I expected to get from Sentech's own message board, but that they won't give us.

The current post in there would show amongst other things that 256K users are currently hard capped at 2KB, etc

What I'm getting at here is some sort of summary of all the message currently active on the board. That way you can log in, check the status and then browse the posts for more information. Locking it will stop it getting too huge and getting hijacked.

Good idea / bad idea?

not a bad idea. nobody reads stickys though (well I dont.. at least not regularly)

post an example of what you have in mind and we can use it as a template. will make it a sticky if it looks useful to the common user [:)]

Maybe even have one of those questionaires Ie "How do you rate the current sentech speeds" and then have a scale from - 10(Speeds?!?!?) to 0(Almost dial-up) on the side of the sticky post.

What would also be nice is if we could get Sentech's involvement , for example at the end of every day we phone up Winston **** and say "Hi, today we have 132 disgruntled users rating your service at a -10 , they're just wondering if you could give a response to them all , here are some of the users quotes which I feel fairly indicate the general views of the day -"1.**** SENTECH 2. THIS IS THE BIGGEST LOAD OF **** EVER etc etc . Would you mind giving us a response for us to post up on our site , or if you prefer they can all call you individually .. if you'd care to give us your home number?"

Wouldn't that be awesome, I mean if Sentech won't tell us what's going on then we shoudl keep asking every day as a unified group:p

I dunno if this sticky would work though. Due to random bandwidth management (RBM from now on) various areas of the network experience different levels of service for random time periods. Excepting of course the hard capping on 256k situation for example. If I have 3K speeds and I log on to see (and this will happen) the service is working fine then as a user I will be confused/angry/disgruntled. But if you think it will work, we can implement it.

Since the mods will have to update it.. and it looks like RTV and RDT are cancelling - that leaves just me who can modify the post. I guess you could mail me your report-backs and I could incorporate the necessary info.

Since "Current Status" is extremely subjective, i.e. different users on different nodes on different towers experience different quality of service, I don't think this is going to work. Mailing the info to the moderators also places an unnecessary burden on them. Maybe there's a way to automate some of it, but again it depends on the number of users participating. Examples of good ideas that needed participation in order to deliver is perhaps Nic's transponder and dorris's page. Just my opinion though

Yeah, but if you are getting 3KB and you log on to see that there is no "user-wide" problem, at least you feel justified to phone helpdesk and raise hell.

Or you see the 3KB, check the status and see that everyone has the problem.

It will be based on the major trends that is happening on the board at the moment. So if only a couple of people are unable to use bittorent, it won't go into the post. I realize that this will be hard to track though :/ Migth be more trouble than it's worth.

I was thinking something like this...

Current Status.

Updated [24 Aug 2004]

1) The 256K package users are currently experiencing a hard cap limiting download speeds to about 2KB. This affects all traffic, single and multi threaded. It is unknown if this is part of the Network Maintenance that Sentech is supposed to complete by the 26th Aug and if speeds will return then.

2) Something else

3) Something else

Current firmware to use is 4.x.x.x

the problem is like often before I have been called by Sentech about my open ticket the day after the speeds sucked but when they call it rocks. Like today. And yesterday it was crap slow. It changes too rapidly and contrary to popular belief I am a little too busy (or supposed to be..*cough*) to update this kind of thing. Feel free to make a topic and keep it updated. You will need to keep bumping it up by updating it. If it works I will sticky it. I will also edit it to just useful info and not "chat".
