The cynic in me doubts very much whether this is about protecting local industries. It's all about lining the government's pockets. They saw a gap and now they've taken it.

What are you talking about. Where's the double tax.

The tax is for imports, a local assembled product is not an import. It doesn't even see a port...unless you export it.

The actual PV cells are made in China. SA does not manufacture those. We get the parts and crudely put things together at likely worse quality than expert Chinese. It's like the HiSense TV plant in Cape Town, they get everything sent from China and then assemble the complete kits in the plastic frames.

Look the idea behind the gov is to always take as much as possible from those who have something and buy votes with it. And spend the rest lavishly. Look at the perks MPs and ministers get in this poor country where children have to use pit latrines and people don't get proper medical care in state institutions.

Didn't we already have some of the highest tarriffs anyway? That's why solar prices are (er, were) already higher than most other countries.

If I recall, the glass front is made by PG Glass. The aluminium may well be local. But still, the most important component, the cells, will be imported.
 
This needs to go down as the worst government in history, the ANC (prior to recent changes) had the most amazing opportunity to change the direction of the country by giving large tax breaks to full solar systems, turning the country around, making their failure into a success by going green and being smart for once. Instead they give you a maximum of R15k tax rebate that took forever to bring out, oh but wait…. we’re adding 10% on top of imports of panels. I ask myself “why am I still here???”
 
Artsolar will not get my business, I would rather pay an extra 10% than feed the inefficient and uncompetitive lazy SA manufacturer...

The ANC has a Messiah complex.

Instead of getting out of the way so people can make a better life themselves, they want to control everything to extreme levels.

Don't think so. We export ore and import the extracted mineral back so it's not completely local. Not sure where we stand with glass.
