New tires bed in period?

Hi all

Just brought 2 khumos for my car, (original equipment) 165/60R14

And thought to ask, is there a bed in period with tires? Or is this only with brakes?

Don't think so.

Regularly checking that they aren't wearing unevenly should be enough I think

I'd take care with wet weather and brake distances though...my last tyre change affected brake distance negatively & unexpectedly (think it was a harder compound)

But if you buy the original spec tyres for this car, the brand specifically recommended in the manual/dealer

Shoudent have a problem with compound?
But not sure if i must keep to a certin speed, avoid harsh braking?

Nah. Not necessary at all. Just monitor pressure the first few weeks to make sure there are no slow leaks.

Being new surely means just manufactured? So how?

Leaks at the valve or the bead when they are fitted.

Isnt that why they paint it with that substance?
Before fitting it?
Also is it important to have valve caps on it?

It's not foolproof.

Tyres often don't have optimal grip straight away. From what I understand it's mould release compound left on the outside of the tyre. Seems to happen more with cheaper tyres.

So if the rim/casing a bit bent it can lose all presure? Possible a blowout?

Also I thought to ask, does having diffrent tires same size but diffrent brand affect anything?
Got 1 continental but the rest khumos, but my spare a khumo, should i ask for those to be swapped around?

The valve cap does not seal against pressure, It is a dust cap.

The grease is to reduce friction when mounting the tire.

Yes, the tire develops optimal grip after approx 1000km(nice round number). The mould release compound needs to wear off and the rubber needs a few heat cycles before it is at it best. Unless you are a really good driver, you will not notice the performance difference.

I am on 65 000km now and not even 40% tread used yet. Awesome grippy tires.

Being new surely means just manufactured? So how?

If the old tire glue was not cleaned off well the new tire might not seat perfectly.. or if there is any corrosion inside rim where it meets the tire.

Rule of thumb is to give tyres around 200km of normal driving before their grip will be 100%.

This. Or seeing as you're in the East, hit a wheelspin or two to get the slippery film off. Then you're A for away

But yeah, never had new tires before, always used, so not entirely sure how to treat them proplerly....
